The 10 Best Day Trips from in Uyuni, Potosi Department

October 28, 2021 Claudia Navarrete

Most travelers come to Uyuni to visit some of the world’s most unusual terrain—the Salar de Uyuni. This is the world’s largest salt flat, and you’ll want to bring a camera for surreal photos of salt-encrusted ground, geysers, and multicolored lakes.

Where do I start? This was a life-changing experience. I'd like to preface with the fact that Salar de Uyuni was a dream location for me for many years -- I wanted to see the salt flat during the rainy season for the reflection effect. Doing this tour fulfilled that desire and more! Huascar was amazing!

After much hesitation, I decided to write a review, so that what happened to us would not happen to others. First, the communication with Paul was very poor, after we paid for the trip, before the payment he answered relatively quickly, but after we paid for the trip, his response was very poor. We booked a trip for three full days, the trip was in August 2019, including accommodation, and a package of photos and video, we booked high class accommodation, and the second night we got a room in a run-down hotel with no showers at all, no heating, and at night the temperature dropped below zero, and the sheets and blankets were musty. In addition, we paid for a photo and video package, a sum of $ 250, and in practice the photos were poor and uninvested, relative to other photos we saw in the salt flats area. In conclusion, if we'll return for a trip in the area, we will book a trip with one of the large companies, and certainly not with a one-man company.

The whole thing was shambolic from start to finish. We didn’t get what we paid for as at the last minute they decided to not run the tour and instead palmed us off to another tour company. Which we weren’t told until we started the actual tour. The tour we did was different (no stargazing, no wellies) and the guides and drivers got stoned and drunk both nights meaning when people struggled in the group with altitude sickness they wouldn’t or couldn’t help. We complained and were promised a refund, but they never happened either. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS TOUR GROUP. Hector is a liar and I would never trust him again - don’t make the same mistake we did. Plenty of other tour groups in the area, don’t book ahead and you will get a much better deal.

The best tour, We felt very safe and was easy to organise! We traveled with a 3 year old and this was by far the best tour agency and they are not expensive too! She also organises private stargazing tours in the salts. Our guide spoke english and he was a wonderful photographer. He took a million pictures and helped us with those perspective photos and videos too! They don't pack you in a big group. We were a group of four and it was perfect! I like that this tour agency is not money minded. In fact we had to chase her to pay the money. She was very kind and I would absolutely recommend her!

We were linked with Andrea Tours through a tour group in Ecuador and we couldn't have been more pleased. Our guide Laura was warm and friendly, and we learned so much. With the above-and-beyond efforts of her and our driver, we made it to Cactus Island while the surrounding flats were still reflective. We got some amazing, one-of-a-kind views and photos, not to mention we had the whole island to ourselves! We also got a sunset tour and stargazing tour as a result of the longer journey. The stargazing wasn't even included in our itinerary. The flats were an out-of-this-planet experience, and we couldn't have enveloped ourselves more within them. We're truly grateful for a peaceful, reflective, breathtaking, and unforgettable experience.

We decided to go with Salty Dessert after doing our due diligence researching travel companies. They were well reviewed and responsive to our inquiries. We chose the 3 day shared tour in Spanish of the salt flats, lagoons, and dessert. The salt flats are spectacular but the dessert was a very close second for me and worth exploring. Our guide Freddie was awesome - we loved his sense of humor and his photography skills. He was very accommodating. We were usually the last tour group to leave each location because we took so many photos and Freddie didn’t rush us. The food was delicious. The accommodations are quite basic so just go prepared and don’t expect much. I think the accommodations are the same no matter which travel company you go with, unless you upgrade to the more expensive salt hotels. Including some photos of our group!
