Back in November 2018 we made a reservation for this island tour. Received the email that we were confirmed for April 30, 2019. We were so excited to go. Less than two weeks before our tour date I received an email that the tour date was "over-booked" and we'd have to change dates. Seriously, how could they be "over-booked" when we were confirmed 5 months prior?? We were told we'd have to go on Sunday, April 28th, but we had already made other plans for that date, so we ask to switch to Saturday April 27th. While sitting in the airport in San Francisco on Thursday, April 25th I got a phone call that they couldn't take us on the group tour that day BUT..if we wanted to pay MORE MONEY we could get a "private tour". I politely told them to FORGET IT and requested a refund. To say I was angry was an understatement. This is the poorest agency I have ever booked with..and I've been to Hawaii 7 times and taken MANY tours. Will never book with them again. Glad others seem to have enjoyed the tour. Wish we could have.......

Demian really came through for us in a pinch. We didn't realize Spring Break was occurring, but he was able to get us set up with Zach and we had a blast. As a head's up for anyone wondering about visiting Hawaii during Covid, do your research. The landscape is changing all the time. At the time of our trip, the state is still not at full capacity. Also, if anyone is wondering how to interisland travel. There is a 72 hour window. In order to visit Maui, we got tested Thursday at Walgreen's in our home state, had results in 2 hours, and registered for 2 trips on Hawaii's Safe Travels site. We flew into Honolulu on Friday, flew into Maui on Saturday for a day trip, then returned to Honolulu for the rest of our vacation. The Safe Travels line moved faster in Honolulu than coming into Maui. Zach was able to pick up at the airport in the morning, cater a day tour to what we were interested in seeing, and got us back to the airport with enough time to make it back with no issues. I encourage you to take the time to give these guys a try. I reached out to another company, and they gave me bad info about Safe Travels, and I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

We’ve travelled the “Road to Hana” several times. Driven it twice. Rode once in a 12 passenger van on a tour. This time we took the private tour with Maui Legend Tours. Our guide was Jack, he’s been in Hawaii since 1979 and knows a lot of the history and local culture. We found his knowledge of Hawaiian history and his ability to share it very pleasurable. He stopped at multiple sites along the road and gave us ample time for pictures. This was a “high end” tour in an Escalade and we enjoyed it immensely.

Drive was very nice but the information that was passed from the tour guide to us was the most impactful! Tom was very knowledgable, good sense of humor, and pleasant to talk with throughout the day. His calm demeanor, under such stressful driving routes, was very impressive. Waterfalls were beautiful and timing/pace was good overall. Highly recommend the tour over trying to go at it yourself! If at all possible, ask for Tom as your tour guide! And leave him a tip after your tour and/or a review here! Thanks Tom!

We planned only one excursion for our entire trip and we definitely picked the right one!! From the moment Scotty Joe picked us up, to the moment he dropped us off we never stopped learning interesting things about the island. We also never stopped laughing!!! The sightseeing was indescribably breathtaking! Scott Joe's knowledge of the island was immeasurable. We felt completely and utterly safe with him behind the wheel and the road definitely got a little hairy at times!! My husband and I aren't big on excursions and we are usually a couple that just does their own thing. So when I say this tour was a good choice, believe me it truly was!!

There are a few options to choose from to explore the Road to Hana so you can experience the rainforest and its waterfalls, streams, fresh water ponds, bamboo forests and lush foliage, but there is only one company where the owners are actually a Native Hawaiian husband and wife team that were born in the Hawaiian islands. There's also only one company that offers service in luxury Cadillac Escalades & Platinum Custom Minibuses. Purposefully named "Hawaiian Style Tours & Transportation" we pride ourselves in sharing our Hawaiian culture, history, and stories about what it's like to live in Hawaii and to live life as Native Hawaiians, while treating you like the VIP that you are! Our family history goes back 150 years and still lives in a little community out on the Road to Hana. While on tour we'll stop by our family's fruit stand that has been operating for 40 years and is the home of "the original banana bread," as well as have a fresh hot lunch at the famous Hana Ranch Restaurant.

Inclusions: Hot fresh lunch at Hana Ranch Restaurant. Choice of various menu items (salads, burgers, fish or chicken sandwiches and plate lunch choices) unlimited sodas, iced tea & coffee., Hawaiian Isle Bottled Water & Aloha Maid Canned Juices, Air-conditioned vehicle, Private transportation, Towels for swimming in the waterfalls (weather permitting), Certified Local Knowledgeable Guide, Luxury Vehicle

Great tour! The hosts were incredibly knowledgeable and made it feel not only welcoming, but vey authentic. It was a great way to learn about the history and culture of Maui and get deeper than just the beauty of the island. It was a smart decision to take this tour versus driving it because there were soooooo many curves that it would have been nerve wrecking to drive ourselves; however we were in very good hands during the tour! The rainforest is beautiful and although it is a long day, a breakfast of banana bread, fresh pineapple and a hot drink was provided for breakfast, a decent lunch was included and they gave us a little gift bag upon arrival. We even made a stop at Doug’s (one of the guides) childhood home which just made it seem even more authentic. Overall if you’re looking to do the Hana road tour, I’d highly recommend Hawaiian Style Tours! They treat you like family!

Below are the summarized points of experience. I traveled solo and had excellent weather (and three drivers). --- THE BAD --- - I received confirmation that my lodging address was pick-up friendly and I did get picked up where I selected. However, turns out Mahalo Tours shouldn't pick up at the address I input. This caused problems as 1) I had to change vans (from Junior) in the morning and ended up with the worst seat in the second van with Lenny as it was almost at capacity with a whole family who boarded beforehand; and 2) at the end of the day, about half an hour was spent with Lenny on the phone trying to clarify who was going to drop me off to my address until eventually Charlie came over to drop me off in the 3rd van of the day. Overall, me van hopping was a time-mooch for everyone and it shaved off time from the tour. - Black Sand Beach. This was the highlight of the trip BUT we were to stop here for 60-minutes and I broke away from the family who also booked the trip to do my own thing. I timed myself and I spent 55-minutes walking/taking photos near the black lava rocks and when I came back up, Lenny was waiting for me, a bit agitated, as the family I shared the van with only spent 25-30 minutes browsing around and were ready to hit the road. Them waiting 20-30 minutes seemed to have inconvenienced them and I think it agitated Lenny who passive aggressively said we should all be conscious of people's time -- directing it at me. As I did keep an eye on the time, I was confident I didn't overstay and looking at timestamps on my photos, I spent 45 minutes on photography and an extra 10 minutes walking around (not a lot of area to cover). If I can spend the full time allotted seeing a church I don't care much for without complaints, they can spend the full time allotted waiting for the rest of the tour group to see the sights we paid for. Lenny should have made this clear to the whole group ... granted it should be common sense when the tour is booked with other people -- but he was also ready to go when the majority were back in the van. If BSB was allotted to 60-minutes... it should be the full 60 minutes. I paid money for this tour too. - The solo seat in the second row on the right side is the worst seat in the house. I was forced into the seat as the rest of the seats were taken up by the family and/or their belongings when I changed vans. The most interesting views are seen from the left side of the van. Good luck if you get stuck on the right side -- esp. that seat. THE GOOD - Drivers were excellent! They were hospitable and good at what they do -- as I mentioned above, I met three. I met Junior, Lenny and Charlie. All three are comfortable with people and very personable. My favorite being Charlie -- absolutely fantastic sense of humor! His wit is unmatched. - Everything of interest was seen. I'm big on photography and it's why I went so I did get my money's worth. Maui also delivered with the excellent weather. - I see some negative comments about driving conditions. Literally the main reason most don't drive the Road to Hana is the winding roads -- it's why I didn't drive it myself. I don't get motion sickness so I didn't mind the drive but do some research before you book and start complaining about the driving. - Food. Food was excellent! They accommodate vegetarians. I love getting sugary snacks (my sugar drops so even if I didn't come prepared, Mahalo tours would have delivered!). All in all, you can't help who you get to share the van with but if you have a large family taking up 85%+ precent of the van, perhaps let a solo traveller know. I'm not the type to bend so it can cause for some bad blood. I'll try to get my money's worth and if I'm given 60 minutes to room around, I'll spend 60-minutes roaming around.
