The 10 Best Cultural Tours in Puerto Varas, Los Lagos Region

January 5, 2022 Jasper Kershner

Explore lovely, compact Puerto Varas on foot, the best way to take in views of Osorno Volcano and the wooden colonial homes built by German immigrants in the early 1900s. Several are designated as national monuments. Located on the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second-largest lake, the village is the low-key antidote to the Lake District metropolis of Puerto Montt and serves as a jumping off point for fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and sea kayaking excursions.

Located in the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Petrohué River delights with its rapids. After a violent eruption of the Osorno Volcano, basaltic material gave rise to this attraction that runs through the evergreen forest. The Osorno Volcano is part of National Park and its height is 2650 meters. A complete panoramic view of Lake Llanquihue Lake and part of the Andes is possible in a sunny day. The vehicle reaches an altitude of 1,200 meters on asphalted road where there is a cafeteria and ski center. In addition, it is possible to reach 1400 meters by liftchairs. Puerto Varas is considered the tourist capital of southern Chile. The peaceful life of streets, visitors and locals enjoy the beautiful view and its surroundings. Influenced by the German colonization and the perfect fusion with Spaniards and Chileans, they transform it into one of the most attractive cities of our region.

Too bad we couldn't stay to see a perofmance.

We arrived on our cruise ship and found our guide, Nicolas, waiting for us in the arrivals Hall at the Terminal holding a board clearly showing our name. Nicolas was absolutely fantastic. He spoke excellent English but is conversant in other languages also. He is a very warm, friendly and personable man and provided us with lots of information about the history, culture and customs, Flora and fauna and a whole multitude of facts about the area during the trip. The cruise ship offered tours but Nicolas took us to areas where coaches would never reach and as a result we were treated to some spectacular scenery and views. Our party of 4 asked him to suggest an authentic Chilean restaurant for our lunch and he took us to La Marca in Puerto Varas. This really was the ideal restaurant to visit and exactly what our group wanted. It was a bonus having Nicolas with us as he was able to advise and suggest authentic Chilean dishes. As a result we had THE most fantastic lunch. If we were to return to the area we would definitely use this company again and I would be putting in a special request that Nicolas was given responsibility as our Tour Guide.....
