Black Ensemble Theater

Black Ensemble Theater (BE) was Founded in 1976 by the phenomenal actress, producer, and playwright Jackie Taylor. A leader and innovator in the African-American and mainstream arts communities, Black Ensemble Theater is recognized as one of the most diverse theaters in the country, producing excellent musical theater. On November 18, 2011, BE celebrated the Grand Opening of the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center, the theater’s first permanent home located at 4450 N. Clark Street, in the heart of Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. The mission of the Black Ensemble Theater is to eradicate racism and its damaging effects upon our society through the utilization of theater arts. BE is the only theater in the nation whose mission is to eradicate racism. We utilize theater and educational outreach programs to bring races together in a community which embraces similarities and fosters dialogue, understanding and acceptance.

This theatre is so wonderfully unique. It is not only an intimate atmosphere, where you are close to the stage and can observe the joy of the audience. The hospitality at this theatre is unlike any other. The musical performers are so talented. There is always a live band and extremely talented vocal performers honoring various celebrities from the past. I have enjoyed three shows at this theatre and strongly recommend it for the highest quality entertainment. It is located on Clark street in the Lakeview neighborhood. There is parking attached to the theatre and the tickets are very reasonably priced. Don’t miss this experience!

Chicago Magic Lounge

The Chicago Magic Lounge is dedicated to re-introducing you to a style of magic created in the Windy City. Bar magic began in 1915 at a little place called Schulien's. After that, over 15 Magic Bars opened up all over the city over the next 80 years. However, with the last one closing in 1999, the city has lost the true art of "Chicago-Style Magic". Now, the magic is back. In the classic Chicago style, we perform table-side, at the bar, and on the stage. Come back nightly for a fully immersive, interactive, and unique theatrical experience. Cocktails and card tricks, the way magic was meant to be seen. Magic Bar: 5:30 P.M.: Mon-Sun, No Tickets Required. Ticketed Events: Mondays at 7:30 pm: Live Music and Close-Up Magic. Tuesdays at 7:30 pm: The Showcase: New & Experimental Works. Wednesdays at 7:30 pm: our Artist-in-Residence Series. Thurs-Sun at 7:00 pm: The Signature Show. Fri-Sat at 10:00 pm: The Signature Show, Sundays at 12:00 pm: The Family Show

What an amazing experience! I was taken to the Chicago Magic Lounge for my birthday and loved every minute. From the table magicians to the main act on stage, the magic was, well, baffling - as it should be - truly entertaining and more fun than I could even have imagined. Highly recommended!

Green Mill

Once a haunt of Al Capone's, this oldest jazz club in the U.S. opened in 1907, and retains the aura of the Prohibition-era speakeasies.

Green Mill Located uptown, drawn in by the green flashing lights and the promise of good music and some fun history and we were not disappointed. From the moment we stepped in, we felt as though we had been transformed back to an old movie. We sat at the bar careful to follow the 3 rules of entering. 1. No talking during the show 2. No flash photography during the show 3. No cell phone usage during the show. There was a $7.00 cash only cover charge to get in, and it was money well spent to be able to listen to the fabulous and extremely talented jazz band that was playing. At intermission we were able to talk to our bartender Gene who told us stories of the days that Al Capone would frequent the place. If you love jazz I highly recommend this place. If you come be sure to bring cash, they don’t accept any credit cards, its an all cash bar.
