The 10 Best Concerts & Shows in Upper Northwest, District of Columbia (DC)

November 7, 2021 Deane Carmody

Washington DC is a hub for American politics and history. Attracting as many school field trips as it does travelers the district offers a peek into the country’s democratic origin. There are plenty of free museums to take advantage of but the real draw here is the memorials and monuments dedicated to great American leaders. Spend some contemplative time at the Reflecting Pool within the National Mall, among the most patriotic places in the country.

Jazz Night at Westminster Presbyterian Church

The band performs on an elevated stage within the church sanctuary. There's an open space in the back for dancing. $5 to see excellent musicians. We've been coming for over 10 years. The audience is every age and the best diversity of any venue I've seen. Generally three sets.

We visited to experience the Marriage of Figaro performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and it was a group of extremely talented artists and musicians. We really enjoyed the performance and would highly recommend a visit to see and hear them play beautiful full orchestra music. The difficulty was expert level and flawless. One of the highlights of the visit to DC.

Our first time to the Shakespeare theater, specifically the Lansburgh at 425 7th St NW. Really enjoyed the ease of getting into the theater. We were in the boxes in BB19, 21 and the seats were an excellent view with plenty of room. Nice not being stuffed in a row of seats. Saw an excellent one man play on CS LEwis, presented by the Fellowship of the Performing Arts, with Max McLEan playing the part of CS Lewis. Enjoyed the after show Q&A as well. Nice Lobby, nice staff, convenient parking, what more could you ask for!

The Capitol Steps

The funniest show in Washington. I see them twice a year and each time I go, there is a mix of new songs and old favorites. When a scandal hits, see the Capitol Steps to find out what rhymes with it. Though if your name is Pete Buttigieg, the song will be "The Hardest Rhyme". They skewer both Democrats and Republicans with their witty parodies of familiar songs.

We went last night to hear Richie Goods' "The Goods Project". We enjoy jazz clubs and the format is pretty standard with a cover charge and a food/drink minimum which we found reasonable. We had enjoyed heavy appetizers earlier so we opted to enjoy a drink with the music. The drinks covered most of the minimum. The venue is very cozy so you can enjoy watching the musicians perform. We had a fun evening and will return.

Left DC 30 years ago, but was back and went to see one of my favorite bands at the 930 Club...My memories included punk bands and mosh pits. We went to see funk, and it was as cool and music lover friendly as I recall. I will definitely be back next time we are in DC!

Located a stone's throw from the White House and bordering the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site, National Theatre is the historic cultural center for the performing arts in our nation's capital and the oldest enterprise on Pennsylvania Avenue continuously operating in its original designated capacity.

Each year when vacationing in DC my wife and I make sure we take in a show at the National Theater. This is a wonderful place to see theater. Great sight lines and acoustic. It has the sense of a Broadway Theater and the shows are National Tours of Broadway Plays. If you have the time they run a in person lottery for a limited amount of discounted tickets 2 hours before show time.
