January 26, 2022 Jacquiline Darosa

The southern France city of Toulouse is a study in contrasts. Visit the Academie des Jeux Floraux, the oldest literary society in the western world, as well as the Galerie du Chateau d'eau, the world's first photography museum. Stroll the Garonne, before visiting France's most beautiful pipe organ at the Saint-Sernin Basilica. Yet for all its medieval architecture, Toulouse is a modern city, home to the European aerospace industry, as well as bars and restaurants in bustling Place du Capitole.

Chapelle des Carmelites

This is now run by the council. There are fantastic paintings on the walls and ceiling. A mini Sistine Chapel. The text explaining the pictures is a bit complicated to work out. Concerts are held here quite regularly and worth the experience of the music in such a beautiful space.

Eglise Notre-Dame du Taur

Reviewed By MeredithAussie - Cannes, France

Walking between la Capitole and the Basilica of St Sernin, you could easily miss this church as it is just another building along a street full of typically Toulousain fashionable homes and mansions (dating from the middle Ages through to the 19th century), now mostly converted into shops and restaurants. Walk inside, however, and it’s a different world, dimly lit and calm. Like many churches in France, you can spend quite a bit of time admiring the artwork, especially the decorative mosaics and frescoes painted onto the walls, arches and ceilings. However, the main icon to see is the statue of the Virgin Mary above the main altar. She is clothed in different garments, coloured according to the religious seasons. She is linked to the sad history of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants in the middle of the sixteenth century.

Notre Dame de la Daurade

Reviewed By 18philippeb - Toulouse, France

This Basilica has been closed for several months to allow a full renovation of the paintings. The present building is less than two centuries old but the visit is actually interesting. First of all you’ll see the black virgin. Although it is a copy (19th century) of a copy (14th century) of the original (10th century), it was an important statue in Toulouse history, used during procession and famous to be able to make miracles such as ending fires or floods. Moreover the huge paintings illustrating the life of the Virgin and Gaston Virebent’s ceramics are really interesting. You’ll enjoy also the nice ceilings in the nave and the choir. A bit off track in Toulouse but highly recommended.
