Fortified Lutheran Church of Malancrav

Reviewed By OxfordStrasser

Our first stop on a ten day self-driven tour of Transylvania, we stayed by ourselves at Malancrav Manor. I can't remember how we came across the Mihae Eminescu Trust but, however it happened, we will always be grateful It is an absolute gem. We stayed in four places - Malancrav, Viscri, Crit and Richis. We did quite a bit of retracing our steps along the rather good but sometimes quite scary E60, but it was all worthwhile to stay in such authentic places. It can't possibly be anything other than a labour of love (even with the cheaper cost of labour and materials in Romania) to offer such luxurious and comfortable places to stay for E60 per person per night and we hope that, by writing our reviews, it may lead others to patronise them. We have stayed at some special and memorable places around the world (I mean of the cases a impluvium type in the Casamance rather than the Four Seasons) and Malancrav Manor is high on our list of those memorable places. Easy too imagine yourself a guest of Rumanian aristocracy as you eat your home-cooked supper by candlelight in the large kitchen warmed by a roaring log burner Spookily quiet at night you can imagine the elegant parties that would have retired to the huge library after supper. In the morning you look out from the balcony over the gardens towards the village and the hills beyond after a comfortable night warmed by another log stove in the bedroom. Oh, yes. The Church. Very nice, not specially memorable except for the rather good museum of traditional life in the upper galleries. But we will never forget the pleasure of having Malancrav Manor to ourselves for one night. We wish the MET very good luck for the future and hope that many more people will be able to enjoy the experience. All credit to the people behind the MET and to the fact that Romania is a much more civilised place than it is given credit for.

St. Margaret Church

Definitely confirm the historical legacy of this city, as a rich, important commercial center on Târnava valley. Located on the road between Sibiu and Sighișoara, in a region of wine production, the city ercted this schrine to mark its importance in the city's cotidian life and to display his economic power to all visitors. Very beautiful and well maintained. Also recommend a guided visit, very interesting for individuals attempting to learn more about the whereabouts of the church and city. Tours can be booked instant at the Gift-shop inside the church enclosure. (Ask for Mr. Lutz Connert)

Wehrkirche Frauendorf

Reviewed By Viorel_25 - Sibiu, Romania

The fortified church is located near the national road DN14, in the center of the village. This is yet another charming fortified church. Some areas are really well kept (some would need more help to reach their potential like the attic) We were in luck to find a very gentle lady that is a volunteer at the church. She was the true gem of the visit as she knew a lot of details and a lot of the place’s history. If they ever consider making an audio guide for the site, her stories, knowledge and voice would be a perfect match for that. The twist at this spot is that a wing of it was converted into guest rooms. We’ve had a chance to take a peek inside one of the rooms and they seem clean, quiet and cosy. The museum also hosted an interesting exhibition of spider web based paintings. ( yes, the author used spider webs to draw on canvas) and a room of traditional items and clothing. You can also climb some flights of stairs to reach the top of the tower and snap a pic or two. The former storage rooms were remodeled into exhibition spaces. One of them presents the traditional hemp processing steps ( kindly think clothes and linen not the other stuff ). Another room is a reminder of the former successful vineyard from the area. The Axente Sever winery used to be yielding nice Rieslings and Feteasca and the pictures and diplomas show they were even awarded gold medals at their time. Unfortunately this tradition seems to have perished after the winery was sold.

The fortified church is located near the main road. If you get there outside visiting hours just call the posted phone number and the keeper will come. There is a small museum which displays some old pictures and some traditional clothing. The fortified church keeps a very simple and clean look. The rib vaulted ceiling of the churh though simple is eyecatching. A mix of corck screw stairs and wooden stairs takes you to the top of the tower where you can find the three bells and a nice view. But you can also take a photo from the narrow apertures on your way to the top. One of them oversees the nowadays road and the photo from that particular window may bring a nice touch. You’re free to explore the location.

Saxon Fortified Church

Reviewed By ioanaa789 - Cluj-Napoca, Romania

It might be the climb through the forest, the low stone wall surrounding the hilltop, the austere interior or the breathtaking views of the valley, but Cisnadioara impressed me the most out of all the fortified churches in Transylvania. There's a feeling of serenity sitting on the benches, watching the surrounding valleys and hills. I feel this church has no place in time, instead it belongs to a legend. This might seem pretentious, but if you like mysterious and romantic places, definitely go to Cisnadioara.
