...nearby West Virginia National Cemetery when I decided to come here for a quick look. At first I thought it was a bit odd that two national cemeteries would be located so close to each other, but I learned that this place is a historic cemetery from past wars while the other one is newer and still open for veterans when they pass. This is a beautiful historic veterans cemetery that is well maintained. The stones are older than you would find at a more modern cemetery, nonetheless it is a really awesome and serene place to visit. I believe most of the soldiers here date from the Civil War era. Here is something that made me happy to see: two gravestones with the Star of David on them for a WWI veteran and his wife. When I visit national or veterans cemeteries, I try to take notice of the religious symbols on the graves especially those other than the cross, which of course are the vast majority. While I certainly didn't cover the whole cemetery, I didn't see one other stone with something other than a cross on it at the newer larger West Virginia National Cemetery. But here in this older, more established place is one. I love to see expressions of diversity especially in the times we are living through right now.

This cemetery tells the history of Charleston and has great views over the city. It's a nice peaceful little outing.

It is right by the Old Stone Church. Lewisburg has a very walkable downtown. You can also see Carnegie Hall and other historic buildings.

Be respectful of this cemetery and the history within the confines. Remember this is a final resting place for those before us. Not a playground fro children.
