Schloss Drachenburg

Reviewed By AkoSiAys - Bonn, Germany

This private villa looks like a real castle from a fairytale and is a very popular tourist destination. It is located in Königswinter on the Drachenfels. The foot of the hill is near train stations. A few minutes by foot. There are also parking spaces nearby. To reach the castle, you can hike. It is quite steep at the beginning but it is a nice walk. Kids can also ride the donkey (for a fee) going up. They are waiting on a shed in front of the train station. If you are not the sporty-type, you can also ride the mountain railway. The station is at the foot of the hill. You can buy the ticket at the station. Check for ticket combinations to save some money. You can also check the internet for such offers and for buying tickets earlier. Another thing to check is the opening hours of the castle. There are times that there is a TV or film shooting and some areas are not accessible to the public or it may be completely closed. Their website is supposed to provide the information. It would be nice though if there are also information posted at the foot of the hill to warn visitors. We went there one time and the castle is not accessible as there is a shooting. We are able to access the garden for free though. The garden of the castle is really nice and you are free to roam around. You can also enjoy the panorama of Bonn and Rhein river. Go up the tower to see a perfect view! On clear skies, you may see the Cologne cathedral. Although you are free to roam around, they also offer guided tours. The interior of the castle is really beautiful. You can take photos but without flash. Kids and adults alike like visiting the castle. Take some time with you to enjoy it especially on a nice weather. There is also a souvenir and coffee shop by the entrance. There are toilets inside the castle and by the main entrance too.
