The 10 Best Budget-friendly Things to do in Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, Andalucia

March 3, 2022 Rosalyn Ihle

Man and nature coexist in harmony in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park. Part of the Sierra Morena mountain system, this protected landscape has it all: high peaks and rocky cliffs, quaint villages, and wooded valleys shaded by Mediterranean oak and chestnut groves. The area is easily explored on foot via a system of walking paths, allowing visitors to properly take in the vivid green grass and colorful wildflowers. Make sure to taste the local fare while you’re here—this region is particularly known for its Iberian black pork and wild mushrooms.

We have been interested in the process of producing pata negra for some time and finally the moment was there. On the drive down to Jabuga from Zafra we had fantastic scenary. We booked a tour including visit to a farm. Our guide Diego (fluent english speaker) shared all his knowledge. Afterwards we went to the curing facility and museum where we tasted the ham 100% Iberico. Thank you Diego!

This was a real highlight of our stay in Spain. We hired 3 adult and 1 child bike (plus a baby seat) for our family of 5 (2 adults, one teen, one pre teen and a 2 year old). The bikes are like new and fully equipped with anything you need from GPS to puncture repair. Sandra and her husband supplied information about best routes to travel on and even accompanied us to the start of our route to help navigate the town’s streets. The children loved the bikes, speeding up hills and mountains with ease. It was a great way to explore the hills surrounding aracena without overheating or pulling a muscle. A great find and well worth a visit. We will be quite sad when we get back on our ‘normal’ bikes in England and can’t find the ‘boost’ button...!

Most people that visit here go to the bell tower but what they miss is the wonderful spiritual relaxing area just up on the slope behind them. There is an old tree which gives a lovely quiet shady area from where you can indulge in the peace, admire the view and indulge in the fresh air and the silence. I’ve visited here regularly since I was 13 years old. Yes the bell tower and the view down onto the village and across the mountain trains never fails to disappoint- but that beautiful little quiet retreat area is what this place is all about. I found that little seat for the first time this year- it was lovely and perfect for a quiet meditation if you are into that. In the winter months it is equally stunning and very quiet, in the summer months there is even a little bar - visit the beautiful church too. If you are in aracena- you just have to visit here- you will be glad you did.
