Love this loop. Done it a few times now and would recommend to do it anti-clockwise: The steeper part comes at the beginning, you can extend the loop by checking out the Lost Horse Mine (ca 30 minutes extra) and then you amble your way back, gently descending and finally strolling on sandy paths past cacti and Joshua trees. Once past the mine there are hardly any people on this trail. The mine is definitely worth visiting. The rusty equipment and exposed situation are a stark reminder of harsher times, scraping a living out of rock in the middle of nowhere.

Amazing views across the Coachella Valley. It was a bit hazy but very cool to view the landscape. Well worth the extra drive (or hike if you like).

The Pinto Basin deals with many areas of Joshua Tree National Park. The park is larger than some states in the US. Known for its Joshua Trees, Cactus, old ranches, closed Mines and Mills. There is a lot to see. and do. A lifetime of adventure for you. Ryan Ranch remains, Key Ranch guided tours, Old Dale Road with Mills, Wells and Unknown ruins. Some 4 wheel drive, hiking trails to all different places, and more. Something for the whole family young and old. Bring water and food to picnic. No phone towers or signal.

Ryan Mountain is an out and back, 3-mile round trip hike with 1,050 feet of elevation gain. That's fairly steep. The trail is dirt with numerous stone steps. The summit is at 5,457-feet, and offers impressive panoramic views of the jumbled rock formations and Joshua trees that make up the national park. Bring water, and be mindful of the temperatures. There is a parking lot and bathroom at the trailhead. Located in the center of the national park, closer to the west entrance.

We were lucky enough to reserve this Ranger led tour ahead of time (minimal fee) and it was so interesting and rich. You learn so much history of the area and of the lifestyle of the Keyes family (and families like them). It made the rest of our Joshua Tree exploring that much more enjoyable; like putting a picture into a frame!

This was one of the highlights of our trip. It’s a nice relatively easy hike through the rocks and around the valley and is a spectacular example of the rocks and micro climates that make this spot so special. Great boulders for scrambling and there are plenty of climbing routes for the skilled rock climbers. Don’t miss this spot. Parking is limited and it can get crowded as it is very popular.

I’ve always wanted to come here since a certain band put out a certain CD....I always thought it looked hauntingly beautiful and it did not disappoint . We got a map from the park service and toured all the recommended landmarks . It is thrilling to see all of the history in this park and imagine what life was like when people lived there . Bring water and good tall hiking boots and food or snacks . You can spend the entire day just exploring . Make sure you stay and watch the sunset over the desert !!
