I really recommend this tour. Done in English the guide was knowledgeable, informative and helped make the tour a success. The story of “Jerez” is so interesting, and complex. So much history in this small family owned bodega

Iglesia Mayor Prioral

Reviewed By BenjySydney - Whangarei, New Zealand

There have been some renovation works undertaken here to some of the external stonework, due to some degradation over time since construction in the latter 1400s and 1500s. This remains a grand working church of the Gothic style and period, with the usual religious statues and other accoutrements and so typically and distinctively, Spanish and also, following an earthquake in the 1600s, some Baroque elements were added as part of a rebuild. The resident storks are not currently there but their nests are, awaiting their return from winter homes. El Puerto de Santa Maria has some major building of interest and this is one of many. The chapels, doorways and spaces, show the architectural diversity and associations with various local families and figures, this having been a major centre in the early days of Spanish mercantile growth and operations.

Plaza de Toros

We came there at the opening time at 10 but waited a bit before it actually opens. It was worth waiting for ! We took a guided tour and could follow the bull way when arriving at the Plaza. We saw what they didn't show us in other plazas and really felt the passion of the corrida. We visited the chapel where toreros pray before the fight. It was very interesting and we could ask all the questions we had about this fascinating tradition. We bought a cape and I even got my name tagged on it... it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip ! In the museum you get to see the bull that was first fought in the Plaza... an impressive piece of history.

Nice beach, different than many other thanks to the stone wall after which it gets its name. The views are also nice, a good spot to go after/before visiting El Puerto de Santa Maria.

San Marcos Castle

Reviewed By BenjySydney - Whangarei, New Zealand

I took a friend to the tour since it was a first time experience for him. The guide was good and informative and of course, the various aspects of the castle's history were fascinating given its Roman, Moorish and Christian phases with different historical and architectural elements combined into an interesting whole. The castle has a large upper level, which was formerly the main stage for fighting off invaders and also some interesting elements designed to channel invaders into a trap. The former stables are now the cask room, full of sherry odours. A sherry tasting and retail area offers a guided tasting tour, during which different sherries are explained, along with their source grapes and processes of processing. The building itself is really attractive with some exquisite features steep in its history. We also enjoyed the sherry tasting.
