The 10 Best Budget-friendly Things to do in Bisbee, Arizona (AZ)

February 24, 2022 Brandee Mangan

Bisbee has declined in size and vigor from its glory days as a thriving silver and copper mining town, but the decrease in population has not robbed the vitality from this historic center. A haven to artists, retirees and history buffs, Bisbee astounds visitors with vibrantly colored rock faces and picturesque houses hugging the edges of cliffs. Its history can be discovered in its numerous museums, historic staircases and a mine tour that leads deep into one of the remaining caverns.

Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, this small rural museum chronicles the history of the historic mining town of Bisbee through a rich display of artifacts, photographs and interesting displays.

We spent a little over an hour visiting the Bisbee Mining Museum. Great exhibits downstairs really brought the history of Bisbee to life. The huge bonus was the upstairs exhibits that were done in conjunction with the Smithsonian. Those were fantastic and took the overall museum to a 5 star ranking. Attendance is limited during the pandemic, so you are best off making advance reservations. We just stumbled on it and were fortunate to be able to access the exhibits during a quiet period. Very well done and friendly staff.

Our guide Benny worked the copper mines in this area, so he knew the history and offered loads of firsthand experience. Beyond that, he was charming and really knew how to read his customers. This is a must do while in Bisbee. Wear closed-toe shoes, plan for cooler temps underground, arrive half an hour before your tour (I suggest reserving in advance), and bring some money: there's a great gift shop. Parking on site.

If you are out and about, be sure to drive down Erie Street. We stopped and had a delicious breakfast at Bisbee Breakfast Club and browsed the antique store, next door, which by the way had very reasonable prices!! It's a fun photo spot, and worth the trip even if you just drive thru!
