May 12, 2023 Florencio Paulino

Named for a local swamp fish, Paraty sits on Brazil's southeastern coast, 125 miles south of Rio, with the Bocaino Mountains at its back. The small colonial town's center is a national historic monument with well-preserved buildings on its pedestrian-only streets. Take a boat trip out into the bay to the flotillas of islands and coves nearby. Explore sugarcane plantations and hike or take a train through Atlantica Forest. Keep an eye out for the monkeys that roam the cobblestone streets.

Casa Luz

Casa Luz has a spectacular view of the Paraty Bay and private access to a small beach of calm waters with fresh water streaming down from the mountain. All our suites have air-conditioning and an ocean view. In some bedrooms it´s possible to see the ocean from the balcony and in others from inside the room. We offer exclusivity, comfort and coziness in a beach front house. Our target public are people that feel like getting away of the busy day-to-day life of big cities and want to experience moments of connection with themselves and their travel partners. In line with this, we do not have TV sets in the living room and in almost all rooms, with the exception of the Ruby and Orange Suite, and we prefer to receive children over 12 years old only. All common areas face the sea, which is 50 m away from the property. During our generous breakfast served at the table, our clients enjoy the beautiful view. having juices, fruits of the season and a variety of freshly baked homemade cakes and breads. Casa Luz is 1 km away from Praia Grande, a charming fishermen village; 11 km from the historic center of Paraty, the bus station and the airport and a few minutes away from beautiful waterfalls. It´s possible to leave on boat trips directly from the property. Our kitchen is open from 11:30 am to 10 pm. Within these hours we serve delicious snacks, juices and drinks. If you let us know in advance, we can offer lunch or dinner prioritizing simplicity and using fresh fish, sea food and ingredients of the season. You can enjoy our kayak or stand up paddle in the calm ocean waters in front of the house or go a little further and explore nearby practically deserted islands. You can also close your day with a relaxing massage with some of the best professionals in the region in our therapy room with sea front.

Good, pretty location, good breakfast but you should eat out at night

Reviewed By m4ttieh

The location is very handy for the old town which is only 10 minutes walk away . You are also close to the bars and restaurants in the new town but down a quiet lane away from the crowds and noise of the main street. The grounds of the hotel are pretty, full of wildlife, flowers and art work. The rooms tidy and a decent size perfect for the first stop after a trans Atlantic flight and the 4hr transfer from Rio. We arrived by a private cab that could access the back lanes but remember that if you are getting here by bus and have to walk the last 100 meters from the high street the road is cobbled and will kill any wheeled cases that you are trying to lug from bus stop to hotel. Best arrive by private transfer from the airport The breakfast room is great with a wide selection of good foods on offer. Keep going back as often as you want , they wont rush you to leave so enjoy the river view. However the same can not be said for the evening meals. these are poorly cooked with tough meat , and under cooked meat. The bar also had a very a disappointing selection of canned beers imported from Europe. Nothing Brazilian was available to drink apart from very over priced Cachaça Forget using the sauna , it was out of use but then you have the old town on your doorstep why bother staying in a sauna?

Last minute solution

Reviewed By LFL2014

On a whim, we decided to take a last minute trip to Paraty, a small historic city, about 250 km (400 miles, give or take) from Rio de Janeiro. Since it was an extended weekend, due to a holiday on monday, there were very few hotel choices available. Now Paraty has some specificities a traveller should know about. Since the main tourist site is the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, most of the hotels located inside the protected area do not accept cars, since they are not allowed on the site. Also, there are some BBs and resorts situated a few kilometers from the town, which makes visiting the historic sites kind of bothersome, if you do not chose to take a cab or the hotel does not offer a shuttle to the city, since it means driving to the city and looking for a parking space. That said, we picked the Velejador Hotel, even after reading a few very negative posts, and do not regret it. Bad things first. It is close to the local airport and the bus depot. However, the air traffic, at least during our stay, consisted of small and medium planes and helicopters, no jets, with a few take offs and landings spread out during the day. The bus depot is about a half a block away, but it seemed very tranquil, with no noises reaching the hotel. Also, there are lots of mosquitoes - remember, the city is next to the forest - so keep your doors and windows closed. Now the good things. It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the tourist attractions and it has its own parking lot. Which means you do not really need to use your car during your stay and you can enjoy your stay knowing that your car is safe. The rooms are clean, but not luxurious. We stayed three in a small, but confortable room, with a small balcony. We had a full bed (a little smaller than a queen) and a single bed. The room was equipped with a mini fridge, air conditioning, cable (no premium channels) and free wifi. Each room has its own bathroom with a shower. Now, if you have never been to Brazil, or only stayed in the larger cities, you will not be familiar with a very common contraption known as an eletric shower, which heats the water that goes out of it with a hot element (like a toaster). Unless you turn it on, the shower will run cold. It is weird, but it is supposedly safe, since there are very few, if any, reported cases of people being eletrocuted in Brazil while showering. So they do have hot showers. The have a pool. The breakfast was only served from 8 AM until 10 AM, and it consisted of coffee, milk, tea, two kinds of breads, one kind of cake, two kinds of fruit, three kinds of natural fruit juices, ham, cheese, jam, butter and honey. I believe they serve eggs and sausages sometimes, but not while I was there. The staff is very nice, they complied with the requests we made when we booked the hotel regarding the beds and, when faced with a very weird problem with the wifi (the Apple products wouldn't recognize the network, while the other systems would), they spared no effort to fix it, which they did. Also, they can help you set up boat rides and trips to the nearby islands and beaches. All that and not very expensive, considering the prices some places were charging.

Unpleasant stay

Reviewed By Mikkeli G

Positives - Not far from bus station and old town. Paraty is probably worth seeing/experiencing (just stay somewhere else). Negatives 1) Cold welcome (and no English spoken, but that was not the problem). 2) Massive hole in roof of corridor outside room. 3) Bathroom not clean. 4) Room full of mosquitos - a killing spree yielded ok results (perhaps 20?) but they seemed to breed in the room with tens more appearing every few hours. 5) Terrible internet. 6) Poor breakfast. 7) Insanely bad value for money (76 Euro per night). All of this awaits you if you decide to stay at Pousada Konquista. We also had the added treat of staying on the same two nights as about 20 unsupervised teenagers who turned the pousada into a school camp with screaming, yelling, running and banging from mid-afternoon until after 1am.

We loved this hotel. The layout is like a series of bungalows, there are even hammocks in some of the rooms. The rooms are simple, but clean and well maintained. The location is also great, right on the canal and within a few minutes walk of the downtown restaurant and shopping areas. The breakfast was very good and we had no issues of any kind during our stay.
