Extortionate laundry pricing. Certain staff go out of their way to help. Hotel is OK.

It frustrates me to write this review because my initial stay was great - the hotel was quiet, location is decent, breakfast was good and one of the employees even helped me drive my car out of the private parking. Given the great first day, we returned for another later in the week - the same person checked us in and I enquired about laundry services. At this point, he should have shown me the astronomical prices charged for laundry because no one in their right mind would choose to do their laundry here even if they had no clean clothes to wear, but instead, he told us to take our laundry down to the basement. There, I was told laundry would be done by that evening, only to be told later that the lady had gone home for the day and it wouldn't be done until the next morning which meant we left Ouro Preto for our next destination a lot later. All 6 people who I spoke to about laundry failed to show me pricing for the service or at least give me an estimate. On the second night, hotel guests were loud all night (not a hotel issue specifically, just a reflection on how noise travels when the hotel is at higher capacity) and breakfast service was not great. Tables remained stacked with plates and the dining area was incredibly busy. On check out, the lady at the front desk knew from the laundry bill that no one informed me of the prices and offered a discount which still meant I was paying USD 20 for a few items of laundry that arrived late, some of which were still slightly damp. I admit I should have specifically asked for the pricing in the first place but I trusted the front desk from our first stay and this part is my fault. Overall, the staff need better training which can only come from management. I reached out to management to suggest this as well as sticking up the laundry prices on the wall so guests are not deceived further, only to be told the laundry prices are the laundry prices. Wouldn't typically review a hotel's service so negatively during the pandemic but felt the need to warn travellers to seek an alternative for laundry if needed and avoid this place close to the weekend when it becomes less tranquil and more noisy.

Very good hotel in an old building, a block from main plaza, Praca (prassa) Tiradentes.

My family of 4 spent 2 nights in this hotel, August 2019. Located in a narrow street of cobble stones (just like town itself), old building, narrow corridor, I-don't-know-how-old style door knobs, old style windows, everything reeks scrumptious merriment of bygone era (even if locals might call me nuts for writing this). Friendly staff, delicious breakfast. My sister forgot her phone still charging in the lobby, and she only found out about her when a hotel staff brought it to bus terminal without being asked! Thanks much.

Pousada super aconchegante!

Excellent value for families. Each chalet has their own living room, kitchen area (sink, utensils, plates, wine opener) and service sink (aka “do it yourself laundry)?. Very welcoming of pets, with an excellent outside area. Gustavo, the owner, is very knowledgeable and can arrange transportation, tours, etc. Not too many frills, but excellent value!

Despite receiving written confirmation of our booking from the owner, they gave our room to somebody else, on New Years Eve, no less. The employees tried to reach the owner, but he never responded, and no one helped us try to find another room anyplace else. They said we were on our own, nothing could be done. Also, the people working spoke no English (or Spanish). Skip this hotel. Our tour guide was able to find us a room nearby.

Excellent choice to stay in Ouro Preto

Reviewed By Nathan J

This is a very good hotel for those who are looking for costs compatible with the service offered. I stayed there a couple of months ago and plan to return in January 2017. The breakfast is really tasty and with great variety of breads. The hotel staff is also very well organized and harmonious (few speak any English, but in the morning a young man works who can offer me great help with tourist advice - when my congress is over - and day-to-day information in the city. Of being the only one, perhaps, able to communicate properly in English, so if you need something and do not speak Portuguese at all, wait for the next morning). Although I did not travel by car, the hotel offers parking which, to the city surprised me, after all, you can hardly see houses with garages due to the Portuguese colonial architecture of the XVIII century. I will be back next year and plan to stay there. One downside is the internet signal that was too unstable.

We spent 3 nights at the Solar da Opera. What a lovely little hotel: full of character, on the main street surrounded by cafes and restaurants but quiet and welcoming. The room was small but comfortable and just lovely. The staff were delightful and helpful. The little cafe was excellent, serving great breakfasts and free afternoon tea and cakes. We just couldn't fault it.

Well located!

The pousada is located a 5 minute walk from the main square, making it very convenient to visit the main attractions in Ouro Preto. The room was very clean and spacious and included a large bathroom. The room rate included a nice breakfast with a selection of juices, bread, sweets, cheese, meat, and of course, Pão de queijo! In general, we found the staff very nice and able to provide us with recommendations of what to do in the area. Arriving by car to the pousada is slightly tricky, owing to the narrow colonial streets, but not impossible. The pousada offers street parking out front.
