Doug gave us a wonderful tour of both his painting studio and property. His paintings are stunning and he even told us how to get to some of the views he painted. His tree and stone sculptures are equally as fascinating and it was interesting hearing his process of making them. His cats Pepper and Casper were also a treat to meet! You must stop by if you are near Inverness.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

Art museum focusing on provincial and Canadian artwork in various mediums.

There's so much here to like! We love how they used two of the historic buildings in downtown Halifax and joined them underground to make one larger gallery - possibly inspired by the Louvre. All the exhibits we saw on our visit in October were well thought out, and presented in a contemporary way. The highlight of our visit was the Maude Lewis exhibit, where they brought in the actual house she lived in, as well as an astounding collection of her work. What a tribute to an amazing artist! The other exhibits were interesting as well, especially a gigantic work by Ken Monkman. There's even a convenient, on-site restaurant. Having experienced how well they do what they do here, we would unreservedly recommend this for any visitor to the city with an hour to spare.

Old Barn Galleries & Gardens

We sell original art that is mostly local - much of the art is the work of art/owner Carol Naveta Rivoire. Carol's passion is CONTEMPORARY ART, and her paintings are full of all the elements necessary - pleasing colors, texture (lots of texture), balanced composition, line, value, and emotion. The galleries are located at beautiful Beaver Dam Farm in the village of Pomquet, 12 min. from Antigonish Town. One gallery is in a former stable, and the other in the former carriage house. -- Very charming and fun! There's a lovely terrace with seating. Have a cup of coffee and enjoy the flowers and container vegetables surrounding the terrace. There are 500 old-fashioned rose bushes on the farm plus huge perennial gardens. -- Drive EAST on the highway towards Cape Breton. EXIT 35B (Monks Head Rd.) Folow OLD BARN GALLERY signs to first road on left (Melanson Rd.)

When we arrived we were greeted by Rodney who kindly showed us around. Later we met Carol the owner. They made us feel very welcomed and answered all of our questions. The barns are very well maintained with a wonderful selection of Contemporary paintings and wildlife photos at very reasonable prices. There are also antiques and some crafts mixed in too. While we were there we were visited by the most friendliest black cat. They also have two beautiful yellow Norwegian Fjord horses, a mother and her son. These animals were very friendly too. Definitely worth the visit : )
