The 10 best All-inclusives in Akumal, Mexico

May 15, 2023 Vivienne Hutton

Akumal means "Place of the Turtle" in the Mayan language, and if you snorkel here, you just might see one swimming alongside you. (Don’t touch it, though. That’s prohibited by law.) You’ll definitely see coral and beautiful fish in the clear, sparkling waters. This tourist-friendly little town is about an hour south of Cancun—but it seems light-years away.

REVIEW SECRETS AKUMAL JUNE 2022 A summary: We have been to Secrets Akumal once a few years ago. In our eyes this very nice property has lost some of its luster and could use a refreshing. Those who visit SA (Secrets Akumal) frequently may not notice some of these areas that could use a redo. Our travel agent did a masterful job in securing our trip from our airline to AMSTAR. We waited no more than 10 minutes to be in a private transfer and on our way. SATURDAY On our arrival, the ceiling fan in our room had just 2 speeds, very fast and off. Our concierge was able to get an electrician to work on it but parts were not available. The following day parts were located and prompt repair. There was a Mexican buffet scheduled around the pool. We were there early and enjoyed a better bottle of wine to get us a table for two up front to enjoy the show. The appetizers were very good. We went for more food but heavy rain started to fall ruining the outdoor Fiesta party. We felt sorry for the staff. They put a great effort into the setup and food only to have it washed out. Monday we had reserved and paid for the use of a Bali bed. Nice location away from much of the noise. It was disappointing that it was saturated from the rain and multiple layers of beach towels were not enough to get the most enjoyment from it. We cancelled subsequent reservations for the beds. Yes it rained a lot but the beds could be better protected for the $75 charge. Monday night we dined at El Patio. The menu was comprised of Yucatecan and Oaxacan dishes. They were very good. Tuesday we ate at Bordeaux. We selected a bottle of wine from the alternate wine list. It was dutifully decanted to bring out full flavors. The chef asked us if we would like him to prepare us a special menu. That he had a special of surf and turf of lamb and salmon. We specifically asked for each to be prepared medium-rare. When the dishes arrived they were so well done we sent them back and asked for just a double order of the escargot for each of us which was nicely done. We never went back to Bordeaux. Wednesday we went to the spa for a scheduled massage. When we were in the relaxation room the entire spa lost power. We waited 15 minutes for someone to explain what was going on. They confirmed a power outage and wanted to proceed with our massage. We explained that we did not want a massage in room without air conditioning and that we would reschedule. On our way back to our room, we talked to two other concierges from other buildings. They stated that Akumal was having issues with their electrical supply and that the resort was now suffering from occasional blackouts due to overbuilding of new resorts. That evening we ate at Portofino. It was so good that we dined there again later in the week. Paulina again presented the wine we chose. Thursday the room was warm and again contacted the concierge. She explained that the system was fresh air based and that the temperature inside and out will be the same. That is not how air conditioning works. We told her we did not agree with her and wanted the unit checked out again while we were at breakfast. When we returned the room was even warmer. Maintenance was going to check the thermostat and replaced it. When we got back to our room, we had no hot water and the room was still warm again. The power outage apparently affected the water supply and the chiller system. They were able to get both back on line. Thursday evening we ate an Oceana. Seafood was very nicely done but it took 3 hours to receive 3 courses of food. They might have had a large party they weren’t ready for. Friday we had an extended period with no rain. It rained every day for some period of time but SA has no control over the weather. Snorkeling time. For some unexplained reason the turtles have migrated to a different area. It was disappointing that they were not close in like they were on our last visit but SA has no control the wild creatures. That night we ate at Portofino again and had another bottle of wine with a great meal. Saturday we went to eat at Sea Side. Because of the Mexican festival we ate at Oceana. We experienced another outstanding meal. And again it was a repeat of a downpour which sent the staff into over drive and shutting down the Fiesta festival buffet again. The preparations were absolutely wonderful. We decided to go for expresso and cappuccino at COCO. We arrived to see local artisans set up for shopping and they were also getting rained out. We went to get a drink to let the rain ease up. I went to the lobby to try to find an umbrella. While in the lobby a drop of rain hit my head and found out they need repairs to the thatched roof. Sunday we had to get up at O’dark thirty for our trip home. AMSTAR arrived at 6:55 for our 7:00 reservation for our return to the airport. Flawless trip arrangements by our TA.

Great trip with amazing staff

Reviewed By bencB5883RS

We just returned from a 7 day vacation and Akumal Bay exceeded our expectations. If you're looking for a quality vacation on a budget, this is the place to be! We were truly blown away by the food at both the buffet and restaurants, with a large variety of choice for everyone. The beach had a little excess seaweed, but the staff worked hard throughout the day to keep it clean. The biggest highlight of our trip was definitely the service! Alfonso makes THE BEST drinks and was a large reason we spent so much time at the bar. His service was so excellent that when he switched bars we did too! Daniela at the buffet is another staff member who made our trip amazing. She truly goes above and beyond the call for all the guests. Belen at guest relations was kind and quick to give us compensation due to a check-in issue. Overall, Akumal Bay is worth every penny. It was an amazing stay!

Not really renovated

Reviewed By Monteiro S

It is a fine resort for those who look for a all inclusive experience, meaning average to low quality of food and drinks as well as overcrowded facilities. The staff is majorly polite and welcoming. What really annoyed me was that the advertised bedrooms (supposedly renovated even as per their site photos) look like back in the 70’s and not well maintained. Btw the beach is small, rocky and full of tons of algae. So in a nutshell keep your expectations low.

Still Excellent 18 Years Later

Reviewed By menudeldia

Just spent two weeks in this fantastic resorts. We were here 18 years ago when it was new and loved it. (By the way, we took many trips in Mexico, Cuba and other Caribbean countries, usually staying in AI resorts. So we have good expectation of "5 stars" over there.) This time, the resort is still excellent. However, down 1 star due to the outdated room. Room: we had an oceanfront room with a beautiful view. But it has a really old bathroom. The AC barely worked and the room was always very hot. Big thanks to Daniel who worked hard and kept our room pretty clean. As this was our anniversary trip, there were a special banner in door and a bottle of champagne waiting for us. A few days late, another bottle of champagne magically shown up. Food: we had breakfast and lunch in the adult section of the main buffet everyday. A lot of choices. Most breakfast I would started with smoke salmon with salsa, wow. For lunch, grill seafood (Grouper, Tuna, Mahi-mahi, Squid and Mussels). Staff there are amazing (Big thanks to Joel, Javier and many more people - they are always greet us with smile and remember our preferences). For dinner, we booked 14 different A La Carte restaurants. All pretty good. The 4 "fining dinning" restaurants (Arlequin, Alux, Le Gourmet and Don Pablo) are our favorites, with good quality (steaks are always tender and delicious), presentation and services. We are not big drinkers. But there are some top-shelf brands. Oh, there is a nice, dedicated Café. Activities: the staff is always working hard, yoga, dance, beach volleyball, water polo and much more (hello to Jesus and Jonason). Evening shows are also good, especially the Magic show and the Circus show. For other shows, the band and dancers are very good. The $10 Origen show at Tulum is a must-see. Beach is long, a bit rocky. Local snorkeling is disappointing. There is a diveshop onsite offering local dive and cenote dive. Note that it is a massive resorts, plus 3 adjacent resorts. So easily 15000 steps daily ;-) Again, this is an amazing AI resort and we had a wonderful vacation. Just hope they will renovate the bathroom soon.

Poor Guest Service Relations

Reviewed By Tony G

Arrived back after a 7 day stay. Many things have changed since my pre COVID stay. Firstly, there is all new staff from management down to the gardeners. From my experience most of guest facing staff do not know what their doing, or know the policies of the resort. Before arriving I sent a request to allocate me a specific building and floor as my wife has mobility issues. I don’t believe the new staff reads or knows how to read the simple request. The room they originally gave me was far from the building request and on the 3rd floor. After a lively discussion with the front desk, they reluctantly assigned me a room closer to my original request. During my stay I had an issue so I reported it to guest services. The manager, I believe his name was Alex assured me the issue would be resolved. After 2 days , I went back and spoke with his assistant Arron, still no reposition. Finally I spoke with the front desk reception manager, Mr. Rogelio who listen to the issue apologized for the bad experience and quickly resolved the problem. The guest service manager lied to my face for days where he had no intention of resolving my issue. It was insulting and very unprofessional for a resort to do this. Now for the changes to the resort. The kitchen at the main buffet has been extensively modified for the better. There is a higher quality for food and it is hot, not steaming hot. The a la cart restaurants decor and food have also been upgraded. I found at some a la cart restaurants, they are understaffed. The building # 29 room 32921 had several issues. The beer fright leaked, the room safe was damaged, the toilet wasn’t working properly, the TV wasn’t working properly and at the last 2 days of our stay, the air conditioner leaked. I can’t believe that the previous guests did not report the problems. The Mexican government has implemented a $2 US per night per room ECO tax payable to the resort and a $ 11 US per person over the age of 3 years exit tax. Some airlines have included the exit tax in the price of the ticket. I have been a many times repeat guest and have recommended the COBA to family and friends however, based on my latest experience, I can’t in fair conscience really recommend this resort.

Lots of gorgeous walking and swimming . This hotel is not like the big cancun hotels. It feels so much more homey within a few days you are greeted by your name when you go to the restaurants or bar. The food is excellent , my only stress was deciding what I’d have for my next meal. Miguel and his staff were wonderful! Manuel at the desk was always there and available to help. Rooms are large and very comfortable and our cleaning lady Carmen took great care of us. I love that they supply a big purified water dispenser in each room. We had s fun day touring around in the golf carts , you can rent for the day or week from Cesar at the front desk area. Theres a great spa at the front as well. Thank you Andy for the much needed massage! The staff are all so helpful and happy. They clearly are well taken care of by the owner . It shows!! Cant wait to return ?
