La Juanita is a small and immaculate restaurant that serves fresh, homemade, and delicious Mexican dishes. Freshly made tortillas and refried beans made at the kitchen from fresh ingredients daily. The green and red sauces are made right there in their kitchen. All the meat and vegetables at La Juanita come fresh daily from the grocery store. Even their bread is delivered daily from a Hispanic bakery. In short, other than some condiments, everything at La Juanita is made fresh daily by Hispanic cooks. They serve the best Menudo that I have ever tasted, and they carry Mexican drinks from the can, bottle, and fountain.La Juanita is a Mexican restaurant transported from Mexico to Jacksonville, Texas.

Don Felix Mexican Restaurant Grill and Cantina

Reviewed By gigem74

Don Felix moved into the same building as another Mexican restaurant called Lupe's. Lupe's was some really bad Mexican food so we were a bit hesitant to try this "new place". I figured it was just a name change, same menu, same décor, same cooks, and same ole bad food. We asked to look at the menu and asked if the menu was new, new cooks, etc., as we didn't want the same ole bad food under the guise of a new restaurant name. We were assured that the new management had fixed things up and the food was good. We decided to give it a shot. My technique for trying out a new Mexican restaurant is that I order one of each enchilada (beef, cheese, chicken) and a taco.......the basics. If this is good then I come back. My wife orders the combination fajitas (chicken and beef). An order of queso was chosen as well. The queso came first. It was very thin, no spicing whatsoever, runny and would not stay on the greasy chips. After a couple of chips, I gave up on the queso. Not a good start. The main courses came out piping hot from the kitchen. Piping hot plates are required for decent Mexican food. My first bite of cheese enchilada was surprising. It was tasteless. I tried another bite. Again tasteless and a very tough tortilla to cut through. Next was the beef enchilada. After several bites of a tasteless beef (no spicing at all), I moved to the chicken enchilada........again, a tough tortilla and utterly tasteless chicken. It was horrid. The taco was even worse.......tasteless and greasy. I asked my wife to take a bite of food off my plate and give me her thoughts......until then I had said nothing about the flavor or taste of my meal. Her first words after taking several bites was that everything tasted the same......flavorless! I tried her fajitas and they were the same. No taste at all. The beef was a cut that was not flank steak and the chicken was a pretty cheap cut as well. It wouldn't have mattered if it was grade A prime beef and chicken, there just was nothing to taste. I presume the chef didn't taste his cooking at all or he would not have served this undigestible concoction to us. I suspect the same cooks from the old restaurant were still there as the food was as bad as it had always been. In fact, I think it was worse! The restaurant itself is no diamond in the rough. No tablecloths or cloth napkins, cheap looking furniture and cutlery, and chipped iced tea glasses. Service was nothing to brag about as wait staff wore really odd attire that looked like it came from goodwill. Nobody wore the same "uniforms". It would appear they were trying to get this restaurant started "on the cheap", but this place is just an embarrassment. If I owned this place, I would be ashamed to serve this sad excuse for food. The cantina is not open as they have no liquor license as yet, so don't plan on having a cerveza or margarita with your "food". Several TVs were "blasting" and the mariachi band music was cranked up as well........competing loud noise is just what I like while I'm trying to eat. I took a few pictures of the "surroundings" and this place needs a complete makeover. I will add them when my review comes back from trip advisor. Sorry, but I wont be recommending this place to anyone at all! .....................ever! Except maybe the local health department.

Easy parking, pleasant welcome. Chips were warm, salsa terrific. They have a signature cheese puff that is a nice touch. Chicken and beef enchiladas were very good, the tostada and cheese puff salad course also very good. Teen daughter had quesadilla appetaizer as a meal and it was a good choice. Wife and daughter both enjoyed their meals. We will come back here again. They have TV screens but thankfully they were not too intrusive, able to enjoy conversation without distraction.

We recently had dinner in this restaurant. The welcome was friendly, and we were quickly seated. Service was friendly and efficient without being bothersome. Everyone enjoyed their meal but me... thus the four star rather than five star. If you are a chile rellino lover, avoid this one. The stuffed chili was very tasty inside, but it was coated in either a very thick flour batter, or wrapped in a flour tortilla before frying. This gave the finished dish a "shell" which was hard to cut and not tasty. I finally just broke it away and enjoyed the stuffed pepper by itself. This would be an excellent dish if dipped in the traditional egg batter and fried. And we found the more than generous (too much)bowl of charro beans enough for a meal by itself. Otherwise, a clean and well decorated mexican restaurant.

We were seated right away. Food was good, waitress was good, food in a timely manner. There were several kids (4-6) running all over the place, tripping people, going from room to room with NO PATERNAL GUIDANCE, the mother and fathere (in name only) just sat at their table and let them go. None of the staff said anything the the parents either. Not that good. If someone had take one of them out the door and kidnapped one, the family would have sued the heck out of the owers.
