We knew this place was supposed to be an excellent choice for fish, but we (a group of 9) were very impressed to discover that many, many other items on their menu are sooo good. Fish soup, veal soup, Turkey stew soup, veal goulash, oven-cooked stuffed cabbage, paprikas and of course the legendary Pista Danko's violin - everything was tasty. Great service and friendly atmosphere.

Asked a colleague where to eat fish soup at Szeged. He recommended only this place to me. No disappointment. Nice, shadowy garden, next to the river banks. Open from 11:00.
Arrived on a Thursday afternoon, right at 12:00. Ordered a mixed fillet fish soup (made of different fishes, for more favour). Soup arrived ready to eat-fresh to my table at 12:05. Served in a metal bowl, what is authentic for the design and looks nice.
This bowl contains a normal serving, what is actually 3 plates of a soup. The soup is rich, real fillet in, less fat and skin, finely spicy. The best to eat with fresh, soft white bread and some cutted hot green paprika. Price is moderate: mixed soup, normal portion HUF 2300 - EUR 7,5. Bread is an extra, counted by piece.
You can ask for take away, they charge EUR 1 for a plastic bowl with lid. The sac they put the take-awayfood is, is an enviroment friendly, biodegredable.
One of the best fish soup ever.

Quite a disappointment in Szeged. Tge waiter was quite unavailable, lapidaric when it came to recommendations and obviously simply a dish carrier. I was just told that everything is local and may just pick anything from the 100-item menu. I would say that this is the problem. The food was mikes away from heart cooking. The chicken dish was just fulled and fried while the pork was disastrous- fat overfried fat pork with mushrooms in somehow pepper sauce accompanied by overboiled macaroni like though and some cream and pepper on the top. Pretty mediocre. Being in the beginning of my Hungarian trip, hope that this is an exception not the rule. Desserts were the funniest part. The so called cake was some mash with cream cover. Even the simplest thing - pancakes tasted awful with something like cocoa milk on the top pretending to be chocolate. In two woords poor service bad food.

Alabardos Restaurant

Reviewed By Kuszto

I wanted to try the locally famous Alabardos which used to be the highest level of service and food quality in the area.
Unfortunately they all disappeared.
We went to try the daily set menu, as a signature of the restaurant. We sit in the wine bar area, I guess. But I really did not expect such a low quality of service. The waiting team has no idea what they do. Hardly get any attention, but if you get they are not helpful or attentive at all. I kind of felt like asking a favour to order my meal from them.
I ordered a pint of draft beer, which was off. When I mentioned it to my waiter the only reply was offering me a bottle of beer. They didn't say sorry, didn't even try to explain why it happened. Just put my pint to the side of the bar. When I went to have a look where he put my beer I was shocked. There were about 5-6pints of beer collected on the side, I dont even want to image why they didn't throw them away including my off-beer.
Food was OK, but really nothing special, dessert was really poor.
You can have some awesome lunch set menu options all over the town for a much better price with a lot higher quality.
After this experience I really don't feel like trying their alacarte menu if they can't manage lunch set menu properly and serving an off-barrel beer.
The whole place seems to be nobody in charge, it is hard to deliver quality like this.
I hope one day I can see Alabardos rising againg..

The connection of past and present in the house’s architecture is also reflected in our philosophy of gastronomy. The menu is the perfect blend of traditional and seasonal Hungarian meals as well as tastes from around the World. Our guests are welcomed by informal and friendly staff. Our bar has a great variety of carefully selected wines and a choice of cocktails that will accompany a relaxed conversation.

nice, cosy and inviting road house, next to Szeged's fish pond area. Unfortunately not close to the city, but on a good location next to the most important highways`intersection. Virtually 24h open, they offer an astonishing quality, with the essential Hungarian food like Goulash soup, fish stew or even goose liver available.
It has a nice Terrace with flowers and nostalgic tools for decoration. The inside restaurant is cosy and inviting, the waiters are friendly and speak virtually every language that could be known in the area.

We are just back from Oliva Bistro and we were truly impressed! We (the OH and me) do love good food and we know good food and this evening was superb. Great space (outside) and amazing food! The duck rillet was great, my cherry gazpacho was good (a little sour - but it is described as sour cherry soup!), but the duck was the winner. We shared! Mains were extremely well presented and tasty. A little too much (we saved room for dessert) food, but we also had a cocktail and shared a bottle of wine. So that may have been a factor. Dessert was perfection! A language barrier/hiccup on the dessert wine front meant we ended up ordering a whole bottle instead of a glass each! Having their website in English (French and/or German) would be helpful, although their website did draw us in to book this place. But we took it back to the hotel...so it was ok in the end. Staff were friendly, helpful and sweet as can be. Very chic (shabby chic) decor and overall - I'd give Oliva Bistro a Michelin star if I could!

Windy and rainy afternoon greeted us on Sunday, so decided to sit in somewhere to get warm, and some whisky. Staff is very nice and helpful. I really enjoyed the introduction to the various whiskies, the recommendations all matched my tastes. Delicious fondue as a closure. Strongly recommended place.
