Kozatska Brovarnya

Restaurant - brewery, where brewed kraft beer and delicious dishes of Ukrainian cuisine

Reviewed By RichardThomas2001

Not just a venue for beer and sausages. Items on offer are extensive and, if you actually get what you order, tends to be quite delicious. Started with chebureki (pastries filled with meat and/or other savories), both lamb and moist meat (combination of pork and beef) - both excellent but preferred the latter a shade over the former. Each order comes with four chebureki so beware about ordering too much beyond your ability to consume. Next came the pork ribs on the bone -- tasty but the problem is that the fat content was a bit overwhelming so it was almost like indulging in salo (pork fat "butter") so I cannot recommed that dish. Much better was the pork on the bone, essentially a pork chop, listed on the menu as vrazh. shmat.I think had I been alone and asked for the check at that point, I would have given this venue four stars. One companion ordered pork shashlik and it came out after 1/2 hour; another ordered the same but the wait time was 1 1/2 hours. The waitress simply forgot that part of the order but could not admit to that. On the plus side, both dinner guests remarked that the shashlik was delicious.Initially, just two of us ordered ice cream. However, it was brought out half melted and we balked. This started an altercation with the waitress maintaining that this is how ice cream is served in this establishment because of the incapacities of the freezer unit. I was having none of this and told her that ice cream the world over is served frozen -- hence the term ice -- if we wanted milk shakes, we would have accordingly ordered.Of course, the ice cream is served half melted because the establishment is too cheap to turn on the airconditioning for the comfort of its patrons. On the second floor it had to have at least been 30 degrees centigrade. For that reason, I would avoid this place in the summer unless you are accustomed to sweating and eating.Anyway, our waitress MARINA USTINENKO, brunette with a tattoo on her arm, got fed up with us and, in place of her, we got the waiter PASHA, who turned out to be acquianted with one of our crowd and was much more attentive to our needs than Miss USTINENKO, who, paradoxically, took issue with the chairs that our 5th and 6th party members elected for hosting their posteriors on account of putative blocked egress yet, two tables down, some guests elected the same without any fuss on her part. Seems to have worked out better with PASHA -- he even brought out a chocolate cake slab topped with ice cream that was not melty (although the caramel ice cream was just as melty as the vanilla we initially ordered). Drank various beers brewed on site (all were good) as well as some nastoiki (home brewed flavored vodkas) each of shots of 50grams. Not bad but would skip the one based on hren (essentially white wasabe horseradish) unless you have masochistical inclinations. The establishment is huge with two levels and a large outdoor eating veranda off the second floor. However, only the interior of the restaurant is well decorated -- embellishments lost if eating al fresco. On the first level there is a children's play area, which is useful if you are dining with a young family member.

Trying to find the place in the dark is not easy - the key is to be on the look out for Ulica Petropavlovkskaya 76. On the corner where the "76" is visible, proceed about 80 meters down the side street (the name of which is not visible). Anyway, if you get there, sample any one of the brewed beers. As for food, I recommend the steak of pork or the steak of lamb. If you are lucky, Vanya will be on duty and cooking for you. His cooking skills are commendable and I recommend him highly. The shashlyk (admitted not prepared by Vanya) was a bit dry. Don't go for the medallions. (Sorry cannot think of the proper name for these in English) If you would like bar food only, try the calimari rings and the french fries. Very crowded and popular place on Friday and Saturday nights so you will need a reservation. Would recommend other nights. Friendly service. Reasonable prices. Not the most comfortable seating but that is a minor quibble. Ground floor is a bit chilly in the winter. First floor a bit warmer with the feel of an British pub (minus English of course).

Но самое главное это кухня, все было просто невероятно и восхитительно вкусно. Очень всем рекомендую!!!

Started with vegetable soup. Fresh vegetables. Fully pleased. Then moved on to spaghetti carbonara - not bad but could have been better. Finally, the pork ribs - while not in great quantity, the taste was superb with very little fat and gristle. Moreover, the BBQ sauce was spot on. Pity the potatoes fried with onion and mushroom came 20 minutes later but I rate this a minor flaw. By the account of a companion, the fish (dorado) was excellent (although the portion size was small). Salads were okay but you might want to tell them not to add balsamic vinegar (unless you like it.) [As a matter of fact, I detest balsamic vinegar on anything. I also detest soy sauce added to salads (though with Chinese food it is to my taste).]Why then just four stars? The cheese burger was atrocious - I decided to have it packed for the dog - a true dog's dinner!! The cheese cake was a let down made of tvorog [(cottage cheese), which is otherwise fine in blinchki (crepes)] but tvorog cannot match mascarpone.Excellent barman Sergey, who also works at Mr. Gold, prepared for us a variety of cocktails that were fine -- namely, B52 and Blue Lagoon, as well as, although not on the menu, Green Mexican. Tasty red wine sangria preceded our cocktails. However, the cosmopolitan did not cut the mustard. Long Island Ice Tea was prepared by accident. (The waitress misunderstood.) I wound up drinking that one; it was okay. In contrast to that with respect to cocktails, however, the variety of beers on offer falls short for an establishment esteeming itself to rank as a pub.Comfortable interior seating -- important inasmuch as some of us were seated for four hours as members of our company sporadically arrived. Fairly kitsch interior. Overall, good place to dine with friends if you navigate the menu carefully. Put this venue on your "to try" list while in Sumy.

Irish Pub O'Grady's

Reviewed By RichardThomas2001

I sampled both a pint of Carlsberger and a pint of Warsteiner. Both tasted flat and it was difficult to discern the taste of one from the other. For an establishment touting itself as a pub, the choice of beer was also remarkably small (although it is possible to get Guiness in addition to Carlsberger and Warsteiner). There is no micro-brewery on the premises as in the case of Kazatskaya Pivovarnia or Vesoli Khukhol. In addition, I cannot discern anything particularly Irish about this restaurant. A quick tour of the menu boasts not a single Irish dish, be it Irish stew or corn beef and cabbage. Nor is there much by way of Irish motif (in contrast to, for example, the Wild West motif of Dikiy Zapad across the street in the Reikartz Hotel). I don't want to sound unduly negative. The food is better than the drink -- just no item is particularly Irish. Strangely, the pizza -- at least the one with ham, peppers and mushroom -- was delicious --- so much so we ordered five of them. (Unfortunately, they are small.)We also ordered five portions of the seafood pasta with tomato sauce. First, the chef quite incompentently covers the pasta dish with rucola. What is need is chopped fresh parsley -- not rucola -- to be added to the sauce. Unfortunately, the sauce is not prepared correctly. The tomato sauce requires a recipe change. Finally, the seafood is minimal particularly the microscopic shrimp. It is really a joke. At least, however, the mussels are normal size (a boon if you like mussels). Overall, therefore, the seafood pasta with tomato sauce flopped badly.I also ordered ossobuco. The cut of meat in the bone with marrow was spot on. However, the meat was stewed swimming in an oily liquid detracting from the dish itself as well as its presentation,. Another entree not correctly prepared (although I appreciated the attempt). Strangely, it came neither with pasta nor with rice, not even with mashed potato, but with potato wedges. The gravy ought to have been brown and thickened. As for the salads, the roast beef salad was superior to the prosciutto salad - the latter endowed with a copious endowment of greens (including -- you guessed it -- rucola) at the expense of the prosciutto. On the other hand, the roast beef in the roast beef salad was ample and succulent.I ordered ice cream for dessert -- pomegranate flavor. This ice cream was delicious. There are two interior dining areas and two outdoor dining areas during the summer. I prefer the interior of the dining area where the bar is not located. The dining area where the bar is located was a bit stuffy in terms of air quality and its interior is in need of an upgrade. There is no smoke-free zone anywhere insofar as indulging in kalyon smoking is concerned and, worthy of note, smoking shisha is very popular in this establishment. Don't expect any kind of pub atmosphere on a par with that in the UK.Finally, the menu on the website is dated and does not reflect current items on the menu. This oversight ought to be rectified by the adminstrator of the restaurant in due haste.
