I found Hotel Appel using this website, and with the help of Google Translate read all of the positive reviews and decided to try it out. I'm very happy with the choice! I have a lot of positive things to say about my experience here, but I'll focus on what may interest other Americans since there are already so many reviews. I booked my room on the hotel's website. My rate was R$88 per night, which (today) comes to about $23 USD per night. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and if you indicate that you speak English when you make your online reservation they will send your confirmation to you in English. (However, if you're a visitor like me, you should learn enough Portuguese to get around, as most people at the hotel and in Santa Maria generally don't know any English.) The hotel provides breakfast and dinner (both for an additional charge: R$12 for breakfast, R$18 for dinner, which at the current exchange rate to USD is very affordable). The meals are delicious and have lots of options. The coffee is spectacular! I've never had coffee this good at a hotel in the US. The room is basic, but well-kept, clean, and comfortable. My mattress is firmer than mattresses at US hotels, which I like, but may not be everyone's preference. Maybe that's standard here; I don't know. The room has a small refrigerator. Tip: there is a supermarket ("Rede Super") within easy walking distance: walk one block north from Hotel Appel, turn left at the first street, and walk until you're looking straight at it. There is a separate wifi connection on each floor, so it's easy to find a strong connection wherever you are. The connection is not quite strong enough to have problem-free video calls, but I had no trouble with email or Netflix. My room is on the fifth floor and includes a small balcony. By my count, balconies start at the fourth floor. If that appeals to you, maybe ask in advance. I never smelled any smoke nearby, and there way no hint of smoke in my room. There was construction in some rooms on the fourth floor during my visit, so I heard hammering during the day, but I did not find it disruptive. That's all I can think to say. I would not hesitate to stay here again!

It is located in the down town district, a few blocks from the Calcadao (Streets modified for Pedestrian traffic only). Does not look like the safest area to walk around in the evening. As the prior reviewers indicated, the hotel is very modest. The property is older, however, the rooms look like they did go through some recent updating. Again the furnishings are very basic, but on the positive side the rooms are clean and spacious. The bathroom, although very small, it was clean during my stay. I did not feel it was a good cost to value ratio.

You can also sleep at the motel and the price is reasonable. All the rooms (from the simplest to the more expensive (for instance, the bangalo s rooms) are all very good.
