Ruby's Ice Cream

Reviewed By Polishedfingers - Frankfurt, Germany

My family and I stopped by last week as we were passing through. We saw several signs on the expressway that made us a bit curious and laugh. I'm so glad we stopped. We were greeted by a very friendly young man by the name of "Johnna". (I probably spelled his name wrong....sorry) I felt he truly enjoyed his job and enjoyed serving his customers. We told him we were from out of town and he gleamed from ear to ear to make sure we had the best service while we were in town. Once my family and I tasted our ice cream we were glad we stopped because it truly was delicious. If your in town make sure you stop in and tell "Johnna" we sent you. Enjoy your ice cream!!

Public House is a tremendously cool place to drink, with a really good beer list. The menu is small but well thought out. Just two issues got in the way of a rave review. My burger would have been great if it had been rare, as requested, instead of well done; I loved the bacon jam on top, which helped balance out the dryness of well done beef. I kept looking for the waitress to see if I could trade the well done burger in for a rare one, but she didn't reappear until we had finished.

I really like that they offer a beer sampler, so I could try small glasses of several of their great beers, but that turned out to not be a wise idea that night. Word to the wise: if you come with a group (there were about 15 of us), don't order a beer sampler. Four of us did, and it was clear they had no idea whose was whose, or which beers were on any of the samplers. (At least 3 of mine were wrong.) The place was not crowded, but I knew we were in trouble when I saw the server who brought the tray--not our waitress--looking at the samplers with a confused look on his face. On balance, I'd definitely go back, but if I came with a group I'd skip the sampler and not order anything that could be harmed by overcooking. Based on other reviews, I'd guess these issues don't happen with smaller groups.

The food was delicious and served in generous portions. Staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. This is fresh food served quickly at a very reasonable price. The sandwiches are so large that the 1/2 combos with sandwich & soup or salad are very filling.

Getting through the smorgasbord will be the challenge...
Food is kept hot, tasty (catfish and chicken).
Service is fast and friendly
When coming up on St James check that they are open and get to Country Bob's.
They are busy but always seem to get a table.
Sit up front so that you are closer to the board!!!
One day I think they serve breakfast in evening on the board...

Missouri Pizza Company

Reviewed By JagearsFam - Saint Louis, Missouri

My husband and I ordered a pizza and wings for carry out. I had to order on a Thursday because if I attempted to call on a Friday or Saturday the phone was busy for multiple attempts. Our order was ready when I arrived, approximately 25 minutes after I called it in.

The first thing that I noticed when I walked in was a line of about 10 people, and at the end, one register. I found a waitress and asked if I had to wait in line to pick up a "to go" order. She replied that I didn't, but she took a couple of minutes to figure out what to do. She brought an iPad over and entered my card manually. The waitress agreed that it was not a good system for picking up food.

We ordered a large pizza with pepperoni and hamburger and Alabama White Lightening wings.

The pizza had a good mix of cheese and tasted like a fire oven pizza should. The crust was just chewy enough, but the bottom was overdone, possibly due to an oven temp that was too high. The toppings were lacking, though. For $1.00 for each topping, I expected more pepperoni. The pizza was $13.99 for a large. The wings were cooked thoroughly, with a good color, but were seriously lacking in flavor. Very bland. No salt on these at all. And they mainly just tasted like roasted chicken, which was a huge disappointment considering the rave reviews that locals have given them. The wings were $7.99 for 6.

Overall, there is huge potential here, but I'm not going to wait around for them to get better. We'll just drive the 15 minutes to Rolla and eat something there.

Average Chinese food. The meal was tasty, not bad, but not great. It was a late meal, but the food was not fresh. Just an OK meal. The service and prices were also average. So is the decor.

Checo's Mexican Restaurant

Reviewed By shellakers - st louis mo

We're always a little sketchy when it comes to Mexican anymore. It's always hit but mostly MISS especially when you're out of town and don't know about the reputation. It's becoming REALLY hard to find good, fresh Mexican! Checo's is definitely the place to go when you're visiting St. James if you have a taste for Mexican though!

Our server was HILARIOUS! He had us laughing so hard we almost couldn't eat! The service was MORE than great! Their prices were right in line with other Mexican restaurants. The menu selection was larger than most though. We ordered guacamole and our server recommended we get a guacamole plate to share... not the typical guac. It came out on a huge plate with FRESH avacods that had been chopped with fresh homemade chips, fresh tomatoes, fresh cilantro, fresh Fresco cheese... SO good! Our group of four couldn't finish it all! 3 of us ordered their Fiesta dinner. Enough food to feed at LEAST two people! Their chili relleno was the best I've had! My husband loved the fajitas too.

Good prices, good food GREAT service!

Why ***** for this fantastic eatery? Because...
Whenever I biketour, it is either "feast or fast" and my most recent circular (Lake Spring>Salem>St. James>Rolla>Lake Spring) in Dent and Phelps Counties, Missouri, was no exception. Most of my route between Salem and St. James was true Ozark, narrow, roller coaster 68 (West), which junctioned into 8(West). This daytrip was preferred as the sky was overcast with occasional rainshowers, which meant no Sun; I had beat the Missouri heat!
Regardless of whether my pedaling is made more challenging by headwinds, heat, or whatever, I always need to consume calories to keep my weary body going, pushing my rather heavy Doublevision. Thus, my routes are dictated by direction of travel, but my stops are dictated by need for nourishment.
So, after having pedaling a few hours West on treacherous 68 (thankfully the other road users-motor vehicles-were extremely courteous & knowledgeable about sharing the road), then another half-hour on pleasing highway 8 (when I pedaled 8 over 30 years ago, it, too, was as treacherous as 68, but MoDOT has since added an asphalt shoulder allowing bicycles easier pedaling), I came up to The Country Cafe.
What an absolute pleasure! And I had arrived before the (15:00) closing time. Owner/operator Nicole Surratt welcomed me, despite my appearance that of a dog dragged through the creek. I also ate my well-prepared ribeye steak and all the fixings like a starving dog. Being early afternoon, I was in my 'no-coffee-but-still-need-caffeine & sugar' zone, so that yearning was quenched with a delicious home made root beer float!
I am so glad this excellent eatery was located where it was, and I was able to keep pushing the pedals for several more hours. Highly recommended!
