Le Brasero

Reviewed By Chalky9 - Jarnac, France

Le Brasero calls itself a "Steackhouse" (their spelling), yet there are only two steaks on the menu, and one of those is for two people to share. The other, described as Entrecote, is quite expensive for what it is, and not that remarkable.
Aside from steaks there are 5 other choices of main course, all of them "meaty", so don't come here for chicken or fish. The starters are all salads and the desserts are all off the Carte d'Or songsheet.
For two courses, for two people, with half-a-litre of house red, I paid 66 euros. Not very good value for what we had.

Restaurant Le Grain de Sable

Reserved this restaurant for my husband's birthday and had high hopes. Menu somewhat limited and no interesting blackboard specials. Waited 45 minutes before given bread or water. Oysters were fine but other appetizers sounded better than they tasted. Main dishes equally disappointing. Can't say the fish wasn't fresh, just not tasty. Menu lacked local fish, simply grilled, which might have been better than unsuccessful attempts to prepare more complicated fare. Four seafood lovers and all found it mediocre. Didn't order dessert. To add insult to injury, there was a sizable error in the check, not in our favor.

Les Delices d'Alice

Les delices d'Alice is on the Perrotine canal in Boyardville and most people will just drive by to the main parking place near the port. Go park your car, then walk back (100 yards) to this delicious little restaurant. It is worth it. Besides, they are open all year round and they have a straight and non-pretentious menu. We arrived in the late afternoon on the day that saw the highest water level this year and the only place open for something to eat was Les delices d'Alice. The service is friendly and so are the prices We had just a quick and easy meal of pancakes filled with vegetables and smokes salmon, but were pleasantly surprised at the rapid and friendly service. Try it out, they deserve to be encouraged.

Le Saint Georges

The menu is printed on the place mat so you can well imagine that it is not changed very often. But it is only one menu, there are many others on the blackboard on the wall and other blackboards around the place. So to choose food, you have to get up to read the various menus. The chef must be on a no salt diet as none of our dishes had any salt in them. We even have to season the chips. The chips were limp and overly greasy.
The restaurant was quite full but really felt like a "piege á touristes". I expected so much more after Reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. Since when is it acceptable for staff to be wearing jeans and "debardeur" when serviing in a restaurant?
A very disappointing experience.

For lunch we enjoyed and feasted on the bigger menu - Eclade, Plateau de Fruits de Mer and Galette as dessert. Absolutely fantastic. Everything was super fresh and very delicious. The service was very hospitable and we felt welcome from the first minute.
The people invited us to come see how the Eclade was prepared - a unique experience.
We spent more than 2 and a half hours in the restaurant, never felt rushed and enjoyed the food, some wine and the ambiance.

Sunday lunch in St. Pierre d'Oleron in winter. Few people about and few restaurants open. We chose Le vin sur 20 after seeing reviews on Tripadvisor. Simple, unpretentious decor, and an unpretentious menu. Starter, main and dessert for € 27, or € 22 if you just want two dishes. Obviously, everything is made on the premises. The Lotte medaillons were perfect. We chose a Chablis and were not disappointed.
The young waitress was very attentive and we enjoyed our Sunday lunch in St. Pierre tremendously.

Stopped there on a whim on our way to somewhere else! We were very pleased with the €13.90 set menu which was excellent value. The roast mackerel was very tasty and included in the price was a small carafe of wine! Definitively worth stopping!

The Thai Mussels were excellent. The best I have had. There is a selection of mussles in a variety of sauces as well as a large selection of former style crepes and bruchetta. The service was also very good and not expensive.

Although the menu could seem limited due to selling only savoury creeps on salads, the crepes were to die for and were made it seemed with quality ingredients and a great alternative to pizza.
The ice cream menu was every impressive and our kids had the best ice cream of the hols.
