Hotel-Restaurante Catalan

We know this Hotel and restaurant for over 20 years, and paid frequent visits. The owner and his wife are not only the founders, but over the years continuous in charge to build the most hospital and high quality establishment in this region of the province Cadiz.
Proof is the fact that staffs from the first hour over 30 years ago are still in charge and fulfilling their jobs to perfection.
The authentic Spanish cuisine is all those years managed by the spouse of the proprietor and because of this, the standard and quality is always superb.
The business is run as a family operation, which ensures a large circle of returning clientele, by the driving force of perfection found in every minute detail. Their secret is simple but very difficult to maintain: constant high quality cuisine, personal treatment of every guest, showing off appreciation for each one’s patronage. We have visited many and many places but very seldom encountered such a sublime hospitality as in Hotel Restaurant Catalan.
Highly recommended and once been there, it’s almost sure you will return.

Some plastic chairs under the awning, some plain wooden tables inside, and a couple of waitresses who have probably been working here for many years. The attraction is fish so fresh they keep it in an open cooler so you can see what you are going to eat. It all comes in from the boats in the bay. This is a happy, energetic place dedicated to no frills but good, simple seafood. Closed sunday dinner (don't know about lunch)

we wondered in here because Taberna del Puerto is closed on sunday. An open courtyard with a dirt floor inside a high wall makes it seem like you are inside even though you are outside. Good fresh fish, and the waiter spoke very good English--that's not easy to find here.

El Fogon del Guanche

This restaurant serves a mixture of Canarian and Spanish dishes, there is a lot of choice of dishes on the menu and you can choose two different portion sizes for each dish, we chose media racion, which was the half size portion, which was still enough for 2 people. We chose potatoes with mojo sauce which is a traditonal Canarian dish normally made with tiny Canarian potatoes boiled dry in salty water. Well this dish was nothing like the original dish, the potatoes were big ones and the sauce although really tasty wasn't authentic at at. So I don't know if any of the other so called Canarian dishes are authentic at all, but this one certainly wasn't. Overall the food here was nicely cooked and tasty, but a bit hit and miss. Another dish we tried was prawns in batter which came with tomato salsa, but instead of a lovely fresh zesty tomato salsa it was made with sundried tomatoes with totally overpowered the prawns. For desserts we chose cheesecake which tasted bland and mass produced, and a banana dessert that sounded great on the menu but when it came was a tiny ammount of cooked banana with loads of whipped cream and inedible pastry. Having been to some of the Canary Islands we love their food and it was a shame that some of the dishes didn't live up to our expectations.

Comida, abundante y buena. Casera... importante, no?
