Province of Siena, Italy Food Guide: 10 Italian food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Montepulciano

August 19, 2019 Marianna Hollaway

Reviews on Italian food in Montepulciano, Province of Siena, Italy. Montepulciano makes a great base for exploring the Tuscan hill towns. Just make sure to pack well-broken-in walking shoes, because cars aren’t allowed in the center of town. Explore the Duomo of Montepulciano and the Palazzo Tarugi… or sample the local wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which has been praised for centuries.

Even in October you need to stand in a queue but it is really worth waiting! The paninis / sandwiches are made fresh and you can choose whatever you like to have inside your sandwich. Amazing cheese, sauces and of course traditional tuscan meat.

We really enjoyed the food and wine on our first night in Pienza. Will we be able to better it? I doubt it. We had cheese on toast to start but so nice with truffle or walnuts with it. Then followed by the pica ragu or boar pasta. All great

Antica Salumeria Salvini

Reviewed By westy54

I previously reviewed this Salumeria back in June 2015 when it was rated as the No: 1 restaurant in Siena and could not understand how it achieved that rating given that it was really just a salumeria and small delicatessen that had a very small internal seating area although there were also a few tables outside. Some four years later it is still no: 1 and obviously has a very loyal following on TripAdvisor. Not much has changed since our first visit. The small building is still divided into two areas, the shop with its meat, cheese, salad and fresh food counter on one side and a selection of other foodstuffs and fresh fruit on the shelves opposite. The other area has a small internal dining room and kitchen with a small number of tables. Since the date of my first review we have spoken to the owners of the apartment where we stay in Siena and have found out that this is their "go to" place whenever they are seeking to buy cold meats for a special family occasion. We have also had the opportunity to sample more of this salumeria's products that are largely made in-house. On this most recent stay in Siena we visited this shop on five occasions to buy various cold meats and pre-made salad items.Without a doubt the in-house made prosciuttos, salamis and, especially the porchetta, are some of the best we have tasted. Some of the salads and quality of the vegetables was also very good. There is also a good range of cheeses to choose from.During our visits we have found the owner to be very hospitable and, rightly, very proud of what he produces and very keen for people to sample his products. His coffee is also very good.

We ate here twice during our week in Tuscany. The service is generally excellentThe ravioli excellentThe local chicken also excellentThe steak we felt a little chewy The complaint from me is from our second visit. We ordered the chicken with truffle from the main menu (page open, pointed, used my poor Italian). The waiter asked if we wanted white or black (which we took to mean an option with that dish) , we shrugged, and said white. It wasn't until our bill came that we realised white dish is twice the price. For those who know truffles I'm sure that's obvious, but there was no warning or redirection to the separate truffle special menu. When we raised this we were simply told "I asked if you wanted black or white", and that was the end of the conversation. I can't really fault the food, but I think a more professional host would mention when they're taking you off main menu, or show some appreciation for the fact you clearly shrugged when asked to make the choice in the first place.Shame, walked away from a nice dinner frustrated and annoyed rather than planning to return. Leaving this review as a word of caution to ensure others pay closer attention.Ciao Foddeh,First of all thank you for coming to eat twice :)Thank you but we don't need that you write a review to warn future customers, because we have two separate truffle menu with different priceFor a correct information when the custumers arrive in our restaurant we inform them about the dishes of the day and then we introduce with a SEPARATE FLYER the WHITE TRUFFLE dishes, where the price of each dish is clearly written like as well the grams servedIn a jar we also let you the opportunity to smell the white truffle in order to make you understand the difference with the black: the with is the king of the forest :)Inside the Main Menù there is the BLACK TRUFFLE dishes with black picturesIn the separate flyer there is the WHITE TRUFFLE dished with white picturesEvery single guest is having in the hands the two menu with the list of dishes with well clear writing price To avoid any mistake every time the guests order truffle-based dishes always we ask if they wish order white or black truffle because we don't whant any problem or mistake We asked you the same question and you answer: "chicken with white truffle"Can you help me understand what we need to do more to make you understand the difference ? :)I'm sorry about it but nobody had bad intentions because you ate and paid exactly what you ordered with all informations in your handsThe name of the waiter who took the order was me and you ate at table number 10 in the lower roomI forgot to tell you, that even on our website all the menus and the wine list have the price because we don't want any problems or miss comunicationsEnjoy the rest of holidays in ToscanaMax

If you are planning to be in Montalcino and love great food and warm hospitality, make a reservation here for the most wonderful lunch. Currently serving lunch and also hosting cooking classes. From the minute you arrive Alessandro gives you the biggest and most enthusiastic welcome. And his wife, Manuela is an amazing chef who creates delicious and beautiful dishes. Along with other family members, they run a a real farm where the majority of the ingredients are from. Six of us dined here our last day in Montalcino and if we came the first we would have returned many times. We adored everything about Locanda Dametra. Bravo to this family for creating such a special experience.

This was one our best meals so far in Italy! Our first night in Chianti after Bologna and Florence. We did the four course tasting menu with wine pairings. Each course delightful, full of flavor, interesting combinations and not huge, heavy portions. A more contemporary approach to the food and nicely presented. The staff was excellent, really passionate about the food and wine, and definitely wanted us to have a good experience. The setting was lovely, a bit out of the way high up in the hills. We highly recommend Terreno!

The quality of the food in Siena has been fantastic, but the standout restaurant for our visit was Trattoria La Porticina. An amazing indoor restaurant with brick vaulted ceilings, just off the side of Piazza II Campo. Their speciality is Game. We loved the home made pasta with duck sauce, the pheasant pie, which were both delicious and the venison carpaccio and Angus beef, both smoked with Cherrywood were equally delicious. This restaurant will be our first choice for our return trip to Siena. Thank you for a great evening.

Me and my friend stayed in Siena for two weeks and we‘ve been to this place several times. It is a very special place as it isn‘t touristy at all!! When you order an aperol spritz (3,5€) or wine you will get food (for example peanuts, foccacia, bruschetta, fried potatoes) with it for free!! The staff is extraordinarily friendly!! The spot is very nice because you can watch locals at the bar on the other side of the street or just people walking by and there‘s also a very nice fountain! We can highly recommend and would always come back!!
