The menu was very interesting with lots of unusual choices. The first course vas tortellini which tasted perfect. The main course was bacala of cod. This was a tiny portion, only suitable as a starter. My wife told me afterwards that her fish was cold!? Mine was luke warm and acceptable as the dish tasted really good. One dessert with strawberries was boring, both in taste and appearance as it was accompanied with a soggy sugar bun. The other dessert was exceptionally good - a truffle flavored ice cream on top of a tasteful chocolate "brownie". Definitively a highlight. The service was friendly and pleasant. A bit more effort from the kitchen with regards to presentation and amount of food on the main course, as well as reevaluating the composition of the strawberry dessert would be helpful hints on how to draw more customers to the restaurant. The Officina Culinaria is a bit pricey, but given the interesting menu it deserves the attention from those who are looking for something out of the ordinary.

We were walking towards trastevere and we saw this amazing restaurant. We tried it and we were not disappointed. Amazing food, choices and wine. Staff were amazing. Loads of table and only 3 waiters. However they do very good in serving people. They are always there whenever you need them. Definitely recommended and going back soon :)

Our Italian business partners had us take an early quit one sunny afternoon and we took the train to Ostia Antica where a professional English speaking guide gave us a thorough tour of the very well-preserved ruins. Much better than Pompeii! After the site closed at 1830, we took the train to the coast (3 stops?) and we walked to this seaside restaurant. Our hosts had pre-arranged everything. We started with glasses of pro secco as we watched the sunset from the water's edge, then the gastronomic spectacle commenced!First up was tuna tartare, chunks of melt in your mouth ahi in truffle oil. Second starter was very tender squid body stuffed with minced shrimp and basil with a creamy sauce, minced olives and crispy fried prosciutto. No rubbery calamari rings here! Third round was steamed mussels in a a delicious broth for bread dipping. Fourth - baked fresh (not salty nor "fishy!") anchovies in corn meal with pickled onion, rocket and a light fish paste sauce. Then onto a primo - creamy tomato rice with seafood bits and pomegranate pips. Then another dish - not really a starter. Nuggets of smoked ricotta, sun dried tomato, shaved cheese and pickled octopus. Crazy textures at work here! Seconni was a a filet of baked sea bass served on an orange reduction garnished with salty fennel, bitter chocolate and red currant. Are you full yet just reading this? We finished up with a freshly made lemon sorbet with fresh mint. Many many bottle of a flinty Chablis-type (or Mersault) white wine complemented all this seafood. Some Limoncello and grappa finished the evening before we sprinted to catch the last train back to Rome.An unforgettable meal in a beautiful setting.

Fantastic Great food, nice restaurant and location difficult to find but easy to park! We really enjoyed the a la carte menu and everything was delicious: they also served our food split between us with perfect presentation and no problems. The five types of bread they served us were amazing. I can not recommend it enough.

We stopped in here on a whim as it looked so inviting from the outside looking in. My husband and I had come down from Rome in a wet and blustery day to explore Ostia Antica archeological site ( very worthwhile), became sidetracked on the way back to the train station by the fort/castle and happened to walk past. Lovely ambience here, impressive display of deli goods and enjoyable service. We had a shared antipasto board and a glass of Prosecco each. If we weren’t travelling back to Rome then we could have easily settled in for the afternoon. A lucky find!Tanks for your lovely fieedbeakHope to see you soon againarrivederci a presto l'ALIMENTARI

Al Bajniero

Reviewed By Peter S

Al Bajniero, Ostia Antica, RomeCheck out the earlier review of the Al Bajniero (from July 2017) and you’ll see reference to the dancing that features there for much of the year – excepting the summer/holiday months when local dancing shifts into the open and, if the sea is within reach, then beachside open. The social festivities of dancing into the evening with nothing except that stars/night sky above you – comfortable table, meal/drinks available – and people whom you know (if sometimes only vaguely) at the other tables located around the floor – provides those summer images of Italy at its best. Dancing is a family&friends week-end activity – ‘nonne e nipoti e tutti in mezzo’.It’s how we came to find ourselves at Al Bajniero way back – we had followed Mine Host (il mio ospite?) to Ostia Antica from an earlier dance/restaurant place in Casal Palocca and then spent as much time there – dancing, as we’d done earlier at the original place; sharing the venues as-it-were. Al Bajniero offers better facilities – spacious dance floor and better restaurant (with that romantic open-air option too).Mid-August, however, and we were into our dance routines at a place outside Fiumicino; great evening venue with table service and menu to suit – popular local foods with popular prices. Live music. So, no dancing available at Al Bajniero tonight – a Tuesday, but we did have the option of a relatively empty dining room inside with air/con to escape the residual heat of the day. Quiet. Easy to talk. Our friends had called us from the restaurant – had we already eaten that evening? We had not. We were just around the corner, and it took little more than 10 minutes to lock up, hop in the car and join them.Second time here this month; we’d sat outside in the courtyard first time. Inside there was. seating for around 60 people at scattered tables in a long dining room adjacent to the dark empty dance hall next door. Around two dozen diners. Eat here at other times of the year and some nights there’s dancing and a set meal (three plates - antipasta, primo & dolce) at tables at either end and to one side of the hall with the dance floor in the middle. Buy a meal/dance ticket. Not a dancer? You can still eat in the restaurant and watch the people dancing though the glass windows set in the wall.We passed on the antipasti and opted for primi piatti – pasta choices for the four of us - that popular favourite ‘spaghetti alle vongole’ with a bottle of acqua minerale frizzante to share. The plates came heaped with a mix of pasta, cherry tomatoes & clams with a garnish of herbs in olive oil. Our friend delved into her handbag for that small tube of pepperoncino (di Cayenne – hot/chili pepper) that she always carries to further spice up her/our meals and shared it round. You have to add it with care or the meal becomes inedible. We finished with caffe espresso.Service was good – it always is - with the waiter (son of Mine Host) delivering meals, removing plates and providing a constant dialogue that comes from knowing his clients over many years. Food was delicious and full of flavour; just that right kind of appreciation that reminds you why simple Italian cuisine of this kind has travelled the world. We even got to share a few words with Mine Host – he was at the checkout register when we were ready to pay/leave. We paid €50 for the four of us – so €12.50/meal; good value when eating quality foods and sharing a couple of hours with friends at a comfortable restaurant. The first time that we’d eaten at the Al Bajniero this summer – when we’d sat outside – it was a Saturday and the place was busy – we’d shared a long table part of a group of 14 with the majority eating pizza although there were a handful of contorni/antipasta plates to share as finger food. People were offering a slice or two of their pizza to neighbours as they finished their meal – for the novelty of that different taste. A narrow table means that you have to get up and move around if you want to talk comfortably with people beyond those next to you. Otherwise it’s a case of raising your voice, and the table gets boisterous as the levels in the carafes fall.Costs came to €15/person once the plates & drinks had been added up – so €30 for the two of us. Good value and typical of local restaurants when the majority diners are regulars from Ostia Antica and surrounding suburbs – but not always, for people wander in from the Ostia Antica Park Hotel next door. The hotel is a popular stopover for late evening arrivals and early morning departures from/at Fiumicino Airport 4 km down the road, with the more adventurous turisti/viaggiatori venturing out for their evening meal. It’s a great place to introduce yourself to the city or to enjoy that last evening meal of your Roman holiday. .Peter Steele November 2018

Arianna al Borghetto

Reviewed By Judy M

I went twice to this friendly but secluded restaurant in the medieval quarter of Ostia Antica. The first time, while I had delicious Saltimbocca, and the owner's family was there enjoying a seafood feast. Rather envious, I asked why there was no fish or seafood on the menu. It had been bought especially for the family. The following day, there was still no fish on the menu, but the host remembered me and said there might be some fresh clams for me in the kitchen. The (home made) spaghetti with clams was unforgettable. That, to me is service! The house wine was generous and very fairly priced, where wine in the more visible bars in town was expensive and the atmosphere less "authentically " Italian.
