Callans Bar & Restaurant

Staff very welcoming and attentive, the place is cosy and comfortable too. Food is top notch, good sized main portions and very tasty. The only thing letting it down is some of the pricing - in particular the starters being 10 to 11 euros for fairly simple dishes. Makes going more of a treat than a regular option which is a shame as we live local. Overall a really nice place to eat tho. The food is great and service excellent.

The Sportsmans Bar & Restaurant

I was hesitant to write a review for this visit. I almost did not. I don't like to speak poorly of any place, but I am honest, and I always give a true account of my experience, as other potential customers deserve to be able to decide for themselves based on TripAdvisor community members reviews. I have visited the Sportsman's many times over the years, and notwithstanding the well worn 1970's decor that gave it a charm all of its own, you always got great food, good staff and generous helpings. The steak used to be remarkably good. However The Sportsman's got new owners in 2015, and the changes have not been good. It now trades under the name "Rosewood Country Club". I visited here just after New Years Day in 2016, and it was sad to see that this restaurant is no longer what it used to be. When we arrived (a Saturday evening) it looked very quiet. There were few cars in the car park. We went inside, and asked was food still being served (it was about 7.30) the Waitress (not very friendly) said yes. She seemed to be the only one on duty. There was no one in the restaurant and what seemed 7 - 8 "regulars" at the bar. We noticed the new owners had upped the prices on the menu. The menu was not as extensive as it once used to be either. Not a good sign. We ordered soup to start. It was vegetable. It was very poor. Tasted okay, but it could have easily been so much better. The quality of the ingredients seemed lacking. We both got a mixed grill for our main course. The Main was fine, but it was not as well presented as it could have been. The portion of chips (in a bowl for two) was good however, and crispy. We both got desert. My friend had the trifle, which was okay, though unremarkable, and I got a strawberry cheesecake. The cheesecake was quite good. We also had two soft beverages and I a pint of Heineken. When we finished our meal, we paid and then we promptly left.I was sad to see how much has changed here. The new management either doesn't care or couldn't care less whether they win new customers. They're staff certainly wouldn't encourage you to return again. The Sportsman's/Rosewood is ideally located, and could be so much better run and marketed, yet it is being carelessly let go. There are much better restaurants nearby in Dundalk or Newry, and you would be better served by driving on and having a meal there. Not recommended. s.

Just back from a seminar we ran in this venue and from start to finish we could not complain about the service. The owner ( Shane ) was so attentive - nothing was a problem for them. He seemed to be everywhere . Bar and catering staff were so friendly and nothing was an effort from them. Venue is big but has a very homely feel. Food is great and its a very friendly venue. Locals were lovely and its the kinds spot ya could settle in easily for the night .Massive parking grounds and location just off the M1 is easily accessible .
