Le Balthazar is a quirky little wine bar in the old town of Paimpol which serves food. There is a good selection of wines, and some nice platters. The hot food is rustic and excellent value for money, all locally sourced. We had a huge plate of belly pork with sautéed potatoes and salad. Absolutely gorgeous and very filling! The restaurant is very small and cosy. The service was great. A lovely place to have lunch.

Having tried most of the rather touristique restaurants along the quayside over the last few years, we've found this one of the better. It's not haute cuisine by any imagination but there is a touch of imagination and invention about the food here, with occasional surprises; their tomato and watermelon gazpacho, for example, is colourful, good tasting, and worthy of a quality restaurant. A recent Sunday lunchtime 'noble fish' choice of sea bass didn't disappoint. Desserts are pretty formulaic and could be better; a crepe is a good option. The wine list has some good choices, particularly by the carafe, where the Visan blanc may be a rough viognier but works well with the food. What makes this place stand out for me, though, is the maitre d': what a great front of house presence he is and watching him working the tables is a lesson in great hospitality. Whether he's dealing with older people like us, the young or children, he gets it right. An extra star for him.

As one of the waterfront restaurants i understand that prices are higher, but we were quite disappointed by our teeny tiny fish and chips (the chips being flabby celery fries) that cost almost 20 bucks. I ordered my favourite wine, it tasted bad, but they took it back and i had a cider instead. The service was ok. not particularly friendly but ok.

Being an island, spots to eat will be limited. L'ile-de-Bréhat has ample eateries, and good ones most; but sometimes you are drawn to a place and discover a harbor for food and drinks, music and casual rubbing of shoulders.La Cabounette is along the road from the docks to le bourg, and we had passed it many times. It sits up higher than the road so foot traffic cannot see in and the guests are not distracted by swarms of tourists. It was unknown to us and we decided to see what kind of place it was.The staff is youthful, good and attentive. I had thought it primarily pizza, and as for their advertised 'tapas', I had figured finger food with the drinks. I was so wrong. My mate had a brochette of beef with mushrooms and I sampled their pizza. I washed down my food with a beer of Bretagne (Philomen ?), and she had a glass of Merlot.I would not have expected anything exceptional about pizza, but mine was superb AND it was more than plenty. I tasted the brochette and was surprised by the excellence of this as well; perfectly grilled. We both decided to have deserts; excellent!... and we were feeling so good and relaxed at this little oasis, we topped off the experience with brandies. They played lightly a sociable mix of music, mostly jazz and there were popular songs that brought out many a fine voice from the regulars [another reason we were eating here was on account of May 1st being Workers' Day, all the hotels and eateries were not serving and their staffs collected here]. They were almost full, but with tables for two or four with one or two large communal tables spread out nicely under trellises beneath a gorgeous Atlantic night sky ... well, it was wonderful!

Mad Atao

We visited this central Paimpol restaurant on a Friday night. It wasn't busy but the food was very good and presented beautifully. One of our party was unsure about the traditional Breton burger with intestines and additional elements but the other members of our party were all well satisfied. The wines were very reasonably priced and this restaurant is recommended.
