It is located south of the city of Porto on the other side of the Douro River. The city proper had a population of 178,255 in 2001. The municipality has an area of 168.46 km². and a total population of 302,295 inhabitants (2011), making it the most populous municipality in Norte Region. Gaia together with Porto and 12 other municipalities makes up the commonly designated Porto Metropolitan Area.

We visited Vila Mar Restaurant in July, during our holiday in Vila Nova de Gaia. The food is delicious, the service is great (very friendly staff) and the whole atmosphere in the restaurant is very nice. If you go there, it's must to try the Tiramisu with strawberries. You won't forget it! :)

After a full day exploring we were exhausted and looked for something close by. The pizza, salad, and staff were all wonderful. It was exactly what we were looking for.

My husband and I dined at Gancho on a Thursday evening. What a delight! We enjoyed excellent vinho Tinto, "Cortes de Cima" Alentejano 2013. The awesome garlic bread was actually a mini pizza- so yummy! The servers, Henry and Luis were attentive and kind. We shared Rigatoni Bolonegese and a Tiramisu. Tasty! We will definitely return to try other entrees as well.

The second we stepped in the door we were impressed with the fantastic service - the owner ran up the street to return a dinerâs forgotten umbrella, then seated us without a reservation, no problem! After the wonderful dishes and genuine, caring and knowledgeable service, we were so impressed and hope to come back in a few nights. Get the house salad, the veal with pepper cream sauce, and carbonara - highly recommend. Canât decide which was better: the food or the service!

Pizzas very well made and very tasty. I tried the Calzone, and a sweet pizza divided into Nutella and Oreo / Eggs Almond and Cinnamon which was delicious!We liked very much, especially the service which was extremely friendly.Correct prices that accompany the quality of the restaurant.Donât forget to try the âSangriaâ!
