North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany Food Guide: 10 European food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Essen

August 29, 2020 Viva Honore

Find out what European restaurants to try in Essen. Essen began in the mid-9th century as home to a women's abbey, then during the Renaissance became an important coal mining town and later a major steel production center. The famed metal-working Krupp family opened their first foundry here in 1810. One of Essen's most interesting places is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, once the largest colliery in the world. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts 800,000 visitors a year, often hosting art exhibitions and performances.

Restaurant Hannappel

Reviewed By YoshiDus

We visited Hannappel for dinner in November with a smaller group during a medical fair in Duesseldorf. The restaurant is located in the outskirts of Essen and therefore at least a 15 minute cab ride from the center of Essen. Despite being not to early only two other tables were occupied, which gave the evening a somewhat stiff atmosphere. The restaurant itself is in a older building but the dining room looked modern and contemporary. The menu is fairly limited and has a focus on regional products with a slightly modern and fancy touch. The quality and taste of of the amuse-gueule, starters and the main course was flawless. Despite the good taste and presentation we were not completely satisfied with our visit. Firstly the service strongly needs to be improved. Despite having three servers in an almost empty restaurant none of them really took care of us personally after we placed our orders. Nobody asked if we cared for more water or wanted a second bottle of wine, so we had to remind them a couple of times. Nobody was interested in recommending a bottle of wine and after I selected some Italian red and asked for alternatives very little to none came back from the server. Secondly the quantity of the main courses was fairly limited, so we would have left hungry if we had not ordered appetizers and dessert. Also a little awkward that the chef de cuisine showed up at the bar a couple of times and chatted with the servers but never came around to introduce himself or asked if we were pleased. All these are just some minor flaws and no big deal but I would like to see these improved since the work of the kitchen was excellent.

Indeed the view is spectacular and awesome from the terraces around this nice restaurant at 10' from the center of Essen. But also inside the seating is very nice.Great service, friendly and competent, particularly related to less known German white wines.Limited card which is not bad at all as it is normally a guarantee for freshness but a little more originality would have been welcome. At the end food was good without being outstanding. But overall a relaxing and enjoyable experience.Thank you for your feedback. We hope you enjoy your vacation in germany and we hope to see you soon.

We went here yesterday and it was disappointing compared to the very good references on TripAdvisor. The special wines on the blackboard aren’t good. The bottle isn’t shown and all wines taste like mud. We tried them all... We should have chosen the pasta with fish because with fish, it wasn’t possible to serve pasta. We got a small plate for almost €30 with a few potatoes and rice. Too much money for that! Desserts were great, but we were shocked we had to pay €200 in the end for 4 persons. Don’t go here, too much of a rip-off.

Had a very good meal here. For the starters, there was a range of excellent Turkish mezze, standouts included the hummus, the stuffed calamari, and the eggplants. For the main dish they had fresh fish on offer, grilled and served with olive oil, either on the bone or served as filets- they were offering sole, sea bass and turbot. The turbot was exceptional, well cooked and very fresh. They also offer a range of meat dishes as well , beef and lamb. Very good service, a good wine list, overall a very good experience.

SCHIFFERS

We went there for a family event and we couldn t have found a more suitable, friendly place, relaxed with honest and excellent food served by very friendly, personal and attentive service. Every dish was served "à point". My Schnitzel would win every "Schnitzel-Test" and all the other meals looked so delicious that we need to come back soon to get more of this super tasty food.I especially like the styling of this small, casual chic and cosy restaurant which hits the taste of time. The hosts were absolutely professional and very friendly with attention to detail. As Aperitiv we had a wonderful drink called "Schiffer s Brause", that contained Prosecco with Lime and another ingredient, lovely decorated with some Rosemary.Werden, this little market town and part of Essen with it s "Fachwerk" traditional houses does already have some very good restaurants, mainly Italian. It definitely need a new restaurant like "Schiffer s" with very authentic, superb German cuisine. For a warm Summer evening there is space in the backyard for "al fresco dining" outside.Highly recommended!

A very nice and stylish atmosphere- not too stif for a star restaurant. Very good service experience and a wonderful and surprising selection of food. The evening was exceptionally great. If you want to spend 150-200€ per person for a Michelin star restaurant- that is defiantly the right place to go and worth the money. Thumbs up for a perfect dinner.

This restaurant offers high class quality. While price are quite high, both meat quality and the cook's abilities are matching U.S. standards. And this is hard to find in Germany for reasons unkowm to me. If you want to have a good steak in the area, I recommend you go here. But looking at the prices, it is not an everyday location. Then again, quality does not come for free.
