The city is surrounded by polders, such as the Purmer, Beemster and the Wormer. The city became the trade center of the region but the population grew relatively slowly. Only after 1960 did the population start to grow from around 10,000 to around 80,000 by the 2010s. From the 1960s onwards, Purmerend has seen major expansion and continues to do so. This expansion has turned Purmerend into a commuter town; many inhabitants of Purmerend (14,200 in 2011), work, go to school or spend their leisure time in Amsterdam. Purmerend is part of the Randstad, one of the largest conurbations in Europe.

One of our favorite places in the entire region! Great owner and staff, authentic, high-quality Thai food, fresh and modern atmosphere! Jan is an excellent host and the Thai staff are eager to please. The Tom Kha Khai and Pad Thai are to die for. Make sure you reserve, because especially in the weekend they fill up fast. Walking distance from the main Purmerend station, ample parking very nearby. After doing our Christmas shopping we visited Arissa Thai Restaurant.The service was excellent with a smile. The meals served are just like in the better restaurants in Thailand.The ambiance is very pleasant and the prices are very reasonable.

Wij hebben hier met zân vieren gegeten. Het restaurant ligt op de Koemarkt en is gevestigd in twee pandjes. Het is gezellig ingericht met Japanse bomen. Het restaurant is een Aziatisch restaurant, er wordt o.a. sushi en Aziatische specialiteiten geserveerd. Het werkt zoals bij een sushi restaurant. Per keer geef je 3 gerechten per persoon op en je kunt onbeperkt doorgaan. Als je met zân vieren bent is het leuk om te delen. Dan kun je zoveel mogelijk proeven. Wij vonden het eten uitstekend, lekker knapperig en warme gerechten zo van de grill of uit de oven. Vooral de St Jacobsschelpen, de Sashimi mix, de garnalen kroketjes, de eendenborstfilet, de biefrolletjes met kaas en de tempuragarnalen vonden we heerlijk. En als nagerecht hadden we ijs, brownies, crème brulee en gemengde vruchten. De bediening is snel en erg vriendelijk. Tonight is een goede keus voor een geslaagde avond.
