Onelia's Place

Reviewed By tbate54

Dropped in here for lunch and wasn't wowed by the place. Staff were quiet, but friendly. The food was slow to come out - over 30 min wait for our 2 meals. When it did arrive it was rather bland. I had the flathead, chips and salad. Basically, the flathead were straight from a frozen packet, probably from the local Woolies. The chips tasted like they had been cooked in an odd flavoured oil and the salad was a basic one you'd expect from a pub that nobody eats. For the 4 fish fillets, I got the smallest serving of sauce that was enough to cover one fillet. I won't be back - not because of poor service, mainly just the food. It's just a bit boring for my liking. Hi, we're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience here at Onelia's. We're just a small town, family owned and operated cafe, nothing too fancy. Our motto is quite literally "Simple food, fine coffee". We pride ourselves on our ability to provide simple dining for our customers but also adding a touch of flare to our specials we offer from time to time. The flathead we buy is sourced from Australian waters, battered in a Pale Ale batter and yes, frozen, but is definitely not from Woolies! All of our stock is ordered in from our suppliers. We're happy to share that we use 100% Canola Oil, which we think you'd find to be a rather common oil used amongst assorted cafe's. Yes, our salad is a basic, lettuce, Beet, tomato, cucumber, carrot and onion salad. We find our regular customers enjoy our simple, tasty food. However, we understand that simple, old-style cafe food is not everyone's cup of tea. Glad to hear the service was ok.

We booked ahead for 7:30 on Friday but it was pretty quiet when we arrived - apparently local folks tend to eat a bit earlier. It's a nice bright room at the back of the Workies Club - not too flash but nice and comfortable.Service staff were very friendly and efficient throughout dinner. Then menu was compact but had the major food groups and good local ingredients. There was some flair shown in the combinations and this was well produced in the actual meals. We had the prawn tian with avocado, goats cheese with beetroot sorbet, surf and turf with lobster cream, pork belly and affogato for dessert - everything was delicious - dishes were not perfect but they were very good - especially the fresh ingredients. The wine list is small but there are some good choices - we had The Lane 19th Cabernet - their most expensive wine but it's very good.We spoke with the chef - Aaron - he's only worked at country hotels and resorts and is only 23 - his efforts here would be welcome in good restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne. Very impressive. We thank you for your wonderful feedback regarding our Esk Restaurant. As we are a country club our chefs and wait staff take immense pride in the provision of high quality service and product. Our chefs source fresh local ingredients for most menu items and then prepare and cook them with pride and passion. We are very proud of all of our food offerings here at the Club and are always endeavouring to improve our knowledge, product and service. Once again many thanks for your kind words and we look forward to seeing you here in the future.

Secret Creek Cafe

This cafe used to be a great place to go, nestled in the valley with wildlife walking around much to the delight of guests. I went there on several occasions for work functions and with friends and the food was always very good. However it turned into a vegan cafe with no advance warning. The menu has declined as they only cater for a minority group. As I have health issues and there are a lot of things that I can’t eat I cannot go there. Lithgow has lost a cafe that used to be well populated. The owners would have been better advised to offer a wider variety on the menu including food that catered for all instead of limiting themselves to a minority group. I won’t be returning and do not recommend itThanks so much for taking the time to post your review! We changed the menu back in 2015, almost 4 years ago now! We published the change on our website and social media, we also held a menu launch and promoted this to local news. We did this to align our menu with our values of conservation and wildlife preservation. You may not know that cutting back on your meat and dairy consumption is the single biggest thing you can do to cut back on your carbon footprint, save water and essentially help to save whole ecosystems. If you always appreciated the animals that live here, surely you also appreciate these values as well. Interestingly, the feedback has always been that we NOW cater to a wider variety of people than we did before. We now cater for guests with dairy and egg allergies, vegans, vegetarians. In fact, everyone can eat vegetables! As always, we also cater for any additional allergies and intolerances but we have never met a human that is an obligate carnivore. We have been busier than ever before since the change and continue to get busier, as more people start to realise that the future of food is plant based! Thanks again for visiting. -Tenille

We made a small detour into the town of Lithgow on the recommendation of a friend, to sample The Tin Shed. The friendly staff directed us to the garden at the rear where we could take our dog and after perusing the menu we decided that we just had to stay for lunch. What a find this place is. My husband ordered the goat curry and I ordered the Spanish seafood soup. Both were worthy of a 5 star restaurant. We sat in the sun and enjoyed every mouthful. We live in the Blue Mountains so we'll definitely be back. The only suggestion (which explains the 4 star rating instead of 5) is that the garden area could be spruced up a little although the whole place definitely had plenty of rustic charm. Thank you to staff and chef, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.
