Smokey's Roadhouse

End of 491 in Gallup and spotted Smokey's. Lots of parked bikes so encouraged. Cinco de Maya but early afternoon and restaurant not too busy. Waitress friendly but somewhat distracted. Took beer order, after 20 minutes hadn't received so asked again. Had been sitting on counter for pick-up. Asked about menu item ala carte rather than full meal. Server checked w/supervisor, reported OK, quoted price so I ordered. Meals good, BBQ brisket tender. When server brought bill said could not honor price had quoted me as another supervisor overruled. A little late to be telling me after I'd eaten rather than giving me the option up front. Very poor business practice, would have challenged supervisor but not worth the battle. Disappointing way to end a meal. Negative experiences not good for repeat business.

Stayed downtown Gallup for a break in the road trip to Durango and were pleased with a lot for our walk around. Coal St Pub included with great service and beers. The $1 tacos and tostadas offered at the bar were fantastic- we ordered 2 each thinking of how tiny they'd be at that price due to how things are in Scottsdale-but shells and tortillas came out filled with either beef or chicken, plus the cheese lettuce pico and sides of sour cream, guac, salsa included which would NEVER happen in that other town mentioned. Love the pub chips for only regular price 3$ and pulled pork on top for ONLY $1 extra....c'mon!! Would love to hang here in the future with music. Conversations with locals at the bar gave some welcome insight to how we'd proceed with the rest of the drive to Durango on top of the research we'd previously done.

We looked at TA for reviews, and we heard from one of our Trading Company dealers that this was "The Place" to see and be seen in town. I am not certain that was a totally accurate description, but I do know that this is one fun place with some really good "bar food" to keep you happy. This is a sports bar first and foremost--CNN rated it one of the top ones in the USA. It is filled with wonderful "sports artifacts" of the owner to make it the ultimate man cave. It is just a rush to walk in the front door and see all the jerseys, flags, pennants, photos, and other sports items. Even my wife, the interior decorator, was impressed and mused that she would use it as a great prototype for any future man cave decorating project! Take a little time to pursue the collection and bring back some sports memories. The food was excellent, and served nicely by a friendly staff. The beer options are excellent, but the wine choices are limited. They are working on that shortcoming and I am certain it will be "up to snuff" by the time we come back next year. Sammy, the owner, stopped by our table to welcome us, and we had a delightful conservation. He is an extremely affable individual (charismatic and the bar reflects that) with a backstory of sports and radio/marketing work that is fascinating. Most important, he is willing to share it. He works the crowd like the professional he is, and knows many of his "regulars" on a first name basis--we like that in any owner! As an aside, we had listened to him (and Al, his radio partner) for 3 hours on our trip to the Chaco canyon. We did not know that it was THIS Sammy--both of them did a great job. In person, he is even better! I have attached his photo to let you seek him out and have some fun conservation. By the way, Sammy knows the area (he grew up in Gallup) and can share his knowledge of "what to do in Gallup" as so many locals all over the world are willing to do.The bar is centrally located in the historic district just south of historic 66--on Coal street. Parking can be tough on Coal, but here is a city lot conveniently located 500 feet away. There is bar and table service, and the many TV's are focused on (what else?) live sports! It is surprising to see many women in this venue, but Sammy assures us that many bachelorette parties are held in the bar private areas. Summary: this is fun place--not to be missed if your are in Gallup. It is, by far, one of the better sports bars we have ever experienced. ENJOY!

We travel to New Mexico a few times a year and always stop here for a delightful lunch. The chips and salsa are tasty, and my favorite dish, the stuffed sopapilla, is absolutely the best (but it's a large dish). They make a really good margarita too! Their combination plates are very good too, served with rice and beans and your choice of red or green chili with melted cheese - mmmmm. Located right off the Fwy on exit #22 - easy on/off.
