Mount Shasta is a city in Siskiyou County, California, at about 3,600 feet (1,100 m) above sea level on the flanks of Mount Shasta, a prominent northern California landmark. The city is less than 9 miles (14 km) southwest of the summit of its namesake volcano. As of the 2010 Census the city had a population of 3,394, down from 3,624 at the 2000 census.

This place is more expensive than we thought it would be. Service was above average but not spectacular. The menu was a limited sushi/bento box menu on the night we visited. There were a number of items included in the boxes. However, seeing the sushi rolls other tables ordered we were surprised that the "roll" included in the bento box was 3 thin slices from what was a roll 1/2 the diameter of the full price rolls. It was basically a sample not a side dish. The food was well prepared and quite tasty. The environment is comfortable.

I've been here many times traveling through Mt. Shasta. In fact, I've been known to time my travels so that it's coffee time when I pass through town.
It's an experience for sure. It's a sort of hippie/new-age sort of place, with whole grain treats, a mix of local types, and some very good espresso.

I have eaten many many almond chocolate croissants and this wonderful oven baking bakery makes one of the best. I have eaten these all over Europe and north America and I could eat one every day if I could.

Our Mt. Shasta diner has the distinction of being where it all began. Who knew a little dream in a tiny town would expand and attract fans from eight (and counting) states? Through it all, this diner has held its own as a small but mighty gateway to this charming town. Just off the I-5, it feeds locals as well as visitors here to play at Lake Siskiyou or Mt. Shasta Ski & Snowboard Park.

This is the first Black Bear Diner, a restaurant we've passed many times (and in many locations) and honestly never even considered going to. Our mistake.
Our last morning in Mount Shasta and we were on the hunt for brunch. We tried to go to Mount Shasta Pastry but there were no tables to be had so we moved on to Black Bear Diner. Such luck! We walked in and there was a wait for tables, but there were counter seats available.
The décor is rustic and full of bears, including a "gift corner"... the kids loved it. Menus are in the theme of newspapers. LOTS of options, and a nice sized kids menu too. Breakfast and Lunch/Dinner are served all day, so you can order whatever you fancy. The food arriving around us was plentiful and clearly being enjoyed by the recipients.
We ordered the Machaca Breakfast Tacos, Huevos Rancheros, and waffles. The Machaca Tacos were greatly enjoyed. Hubby and I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and YUMMM. Crispy tortillas, tasty chorizo, great Chile verde salsa, and perfectly cooked eggs. They came with great hash browns and a cup of fruit. Hubby ate his entire plate, and wasn't hungry until dinner. I couldn't down my plate. The waffles were great. Warning - these are HUGE PORTIONS and DELICIOUS!
Sad it took us so long to enjoy brekkie at Black Bear, but we'll certainly enjoy future visits.

We had breakfast here once and dinner once At breakfast the eggs Benedictine was undercooked. Tasted ok and was generous meal with hash browns. Came here with a friend for dinner . Had the Ravioli my friend had a basic pasta dish .
He also add meatballs and I ordered sausage link .
The pasta was bland , almost tasteless . The servings were small .
We ordered it family style which came with soup and salad so we had more then enough food
I understand that places are cutting back to save money , but pasta is cheap and making a GOOD SAUSE is what being a Italian place is all about !!!
There really are very few places in MT Shasta that are any good if you want a higher quality meal

We had been told by several locals that the meals here were tops. However, we found the selections to be somewhat pedestrian with few really esoteric choices. Burgers or Wings & Fries, Fish & Chips, Panini - Reuben, Turkey, or Veggie were mainstays on the menu. More unusual items were a Soft Shell Crab BLT, a Wild Salmon Sandwich and Pulled Pork on a brioche bun. The Fall River IPA was a good local choice beer while several others, like Racer 5, Drakes 1500, and Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA - are rather common and can be found throughout California. Dinning outside on a warm evening was definitely a plus.

The clerk at my hotel (across the street) recommended this restaurant. I subsequently learned that there is a branch of this chain in almost all of the small cities in Northern California, 14 in all.
Prices here are higher than those in the Mission District of San Francisco, where the owners pay high rents and higher salaries, So this must be quite a profitable operation.
I had the chicken mole plate, which came with rice and beans. At $16, it was no bargain, but the fajita plate was $20, and a plate with a burrito and an enchilada was $15. Ouch! My dish was OK, nothing special, and the service was also OK. But I wouldn't return and, at these prices, I can't recommend it.
