Pho 888

Reviewed By Anddyh

Birthday lunch on a cold rainy Friday afternoon just had to be Pho. Having returned to Melbourne from Sydney after 14 years meant that this was possibly going to be a hit or miss event. A quick search online pointed at Box Hill. There was a great choice but Pho 888 kept coming to the top of the list in a beckoning way. All was revealed when I sat down in the restaurant and faced the mural on the window. A chicken head facing a cow head. That was the mural of our original “beef or chicken” café, from over 20 years ago, this felt like the same location. Back then it was manned by very patient staff who appeared to know 3 words in English. Beef or chicken! They always delivered great beef or chicken noodle soup and sides of great spring rolls. A meal for a family of 5 for around $20 in those days.We learnt at the end of the meal that the renovations had just been completed a couple of weeks ago. So the cooling brilliant green rural seen of Vietnam on one wall reflected by the mirror on the other wall had us eating in a beautiful very soothing country setting in the middle of Box hill. Missing were the menu items in Vietnamese taped to the walls that when you asked always translated as beef or chicken. Replaced by a great menu with pictures and as always great prices. And a great crowd for lunch. Lunch was a special chicken Pho, the pork chops and a side of spring rolls. In no order of special, fantastic or delightful. The dipping sauce for the spring rolls was drinkable. Its balance of sugar salt and chilli one of those special Vietnamese moments, punctuated by the crunchy fine strands of carrot that looked like saffron fronds delivering an unexpected crunch level for such fine slices. That’s only the dipping sauce. The prawn rolls delivered the sensation of just that. A crunchy wrapper around a juicy prawn filling that delivered the flavour complexity of a fresh grilled prawn. When wrapped in the fresh iceberg lettuce leaf and dipped in the sauce… that’s a great flavour delivery hard to put into words. We did hesitate to question one another about the filling, was it a prawn or minced prawn? But too late! That was the last one. Yum.The glaze on the pork made then look sensational. The flavour divine and the salad simple but complementary to the pork. It was ordered as a low carb meal choice and delivered great depth of flavour and tenderness in the meat complemented by a well-dressed salad with an exciting punchy coriander zing to it. Overall a great dish. And for the birthday boy Chicken Pho. You have no idea how hard it is to find a Chicken Pho in Sydney. Its easier to find a souvlakia (usually deconstructed.) up there than this gastronomical wonder. I had impatiently torn the leaves off my mint and squeezed the lemon over the chilli in anticipation as I waited for the soup. It arrived (best part of 5 minutes wait, but it has been a long time!) The large bowl was placed in front of me. The courtesies over, on went the bean sprouts and mint followed by the chilli and lemon juice. The chopsticks gently pushed then down into the delicious broth chicken, giblets and noodles and livers. Then the rest of the necessary ritual. A half 50mm circle of red then brown sauce in the middle, then gently whisk the sauces through the broth. Then taste and drift off into delicious memories. This tasted a lot better than the memories. The broth had enormous depth, the sauces just acted to frame the work of wonder. The slices of chicken Brest so fresh and juicy they squeaked on your teeth as you bit into them. It doesn’t get much better that that or does it. The giblets had been cooked until tender then sliced, turning them into flavour punched soft morsels of sheer delight. Mmmmm the livers, usually quite dry in soup, prone to over cooking. Not in this soup, delicious just right. The thin sliced noodles were in abundance but not dominant. They lasted to the bottom of the delicious broth and still maintained good texture. The choice of birds eye chillies, a good but not overpowering I would estimate a burn of around 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. That’s using the whole serve in one bowl of soup. I like chilli. Reset the bar and the memories, this Pho is my new number 1. Great food, great service lovely space to eat in. We’ll be regulars.

Went with fussy in-laws, expecting a few problems- but no, everything was perfect. We chose the $28 banquet and most of our 8 could not fit in dessert. Fantastic service and food and NO corkage! Did I mention that it is strictly BYO. All comments were positive and 'just like the old days' Chinese restaurants.

The rice paper rolls were large and stuffed full of goodies. The vegetarian curry was substantial and tasty. The scallops (6) and vegetables had the most delicious ginger sauce. With a plain rice for two and jasmine tea the price was a very respectable $50. We definitely will return and try some of the other items on the menu.

Food was good, ambience is comfortable and service was awesome! What makes us comfortable the minute we stepped in restaurant is the service, the staff are well trained and courteous. I have no complaints on the food , the presentation was great and portion was reasonable on the hind side the price was slightly stiff on certain items. Nevertheless, the service overcome the stiff price. Did not try the dessert as we felt it is western and could be too strong on sweetness.

Feeling under the weather, decided to have pho soup and found this gem in Box Hill. Nothing fancy but simply great pho. Generous size bowls.....the large is enough for two adults. Wide range of soups on offee including laksas. We had the raw beef pho which was piping hot and not too heavy. The restaurant also has a wide asian menu. Friendly staff...quick service. Highly recommended.

The service here reflected the food - average. Not overly friendly but efficient and the food is alright but bland in taste. Unfortunately for Indochine, there is a really good Vietnamese restaurant just down from it so the competition in the area wouldn't make us return.

As first time diners on a recommendation, we couldn't fault this lovely restaurant. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful, service prompt and food, beyond expectations. Vegetarian can be hit and miss in some cafes however this fare was very much hit. My entree of tofu rice paper rolls were exquisite. Veggie Pad Thai as a main was lovely too. Recommended.

Basic, crowded but very good food. Pho, noodles and special rice in abundance. Hard working team and reasonably priced. Enjoyable despite being hectic. They dont take bookings, so you will need to queue, but they are quick, apologetic and appreciative. Thanks for the vote if you found this review helpful
