The Croft Inn

We open for the season at 5.30pm on Wednesday 1st April 2020. Welcoming and homely, The Croft Inn sits in rural Speyside in the heart of the Speyside whisky trail, commanding lovely views over surrounding countryside from our "Malt Room" restaurant. Recen

Based on the reviews this was supposed to be a restaurant with good food. But this turned out not to be true. Small pub section where we had a drink, restaurant is only small and was busy. A lot of food on the menu is battered or wrapped in pastry. I choose the Welly which is a loin of venison with mash and vegetables. I don't like food in pastry that much but this seemed to be the best choice. Meat in pastry was perfectely cooked but very small piece of meat and a lot of soft doughy pastry. Not much flavour. Mashed and vegetables were very bland, no taste at all, even the mashed was pure potato without using something to make it tasty. Very disappointing, especially as for a pub style restaurant this was not cheap for what you get. The fish and chips was slightly better but also no ot much flavour. This was the least meal on our whole trip. Choice of wine is also very small, just some very basic ones. Not recommended

We couldn't miss this restuarant thanks to the banners, etc. The 'Lunch Time' menu outside had us confused for a moment only, but the lack of one in braille was a let down :-) The restaurant is very comfortable and most of the staff had geniune warmth, especially the slightly forgetful waitress. One efficient staff member seemed to be from the set of 'Trainspotting' and added a certain artistic frissance. The decor is very modern and interesting. You will be lucky it seemed to get a table without booking. The food was truly excellent and displayed artistically at a very reasonable price.

The omens aren't good from the outside - we would normally avoid anywhere that has large photos of their food on an amateurish looking sign outside... we used to go often and it was always good (years ago). But we popped in on a Saturday afternoon, hoping for dinner, but it was empty and the bar staff (who weren't friendly, helpful or cheerful) said the kitchen only opened at 5.30. We decided to have beers and wait. In the dining area, it had a bit of a stale smell, as we were just getting to the point of ordering food, one of our party went to the ladies and - without going into detail - was horrified by it, and asked that we leave. On top of that - we think it was the owner? - appeared with a dog, and told us we'd have to "release our tables by 6.30" as they needed them back (there was no reserved signs and we were the only ones there). We fled - and won't be back (despite often being in the area) - and had a lovely dinner at the Clockhouse over the road instead.
