Gypsy Cafe

Reviewed By SonomaLocal - Petaluma, CA

The menu is unassuming at first but the food is quite tasty. Most lunch items are around $12-13 (salads, burgers, sandwiches). They are a breakfast/lunch place only (closes at 2:30pm) and once a week for dinner by reservation. Beer and wine are available. Decorations are european'ish with a twist of garage sale chic. We were here closer to closing so plenty of seating. Service was a little inconsistent but nothing bad. I'd come again.

K & L Bistro

Prior to moving down the street to a larger location K&L Bistro was a favorite restaurant. It has become very average since then and their happy hour leaves a lot to be desired. The non vintage house wine ( 6 bucks at Costco )is a quaff and barely drinkable. The beans w jalapeños was only fair and left my wife and I feeling queasy after returning home. The place is very loud w music blasting and it is impossible to relax and have a conversation. I generously give it an average rating because it is an attractive place and the happy hour Lagunitas IPA is very good. Perhaps we ordered the wrong thing but a serving of refried beans with 3 or 4 jalapeños on top is hardly worthy of a 4 star restaurant.

I have been to this restaurant several times and intend to keep going back!! The food is very good and very fresh. Everyone in our party raved about the food. My particular favorites are chicken tikka masala and for an appetizer, the samosa chaat. You can't go wrong!

We found this delightful spot rather by accident and promptly fell in love. Food is fantastic, attentive service and casual atmosphere. Wonderful opportunity to discover and taste wines from small local vineyards. Brian and Meekk are delightful hosts. Their menu changes with the seasons and offers some incredible dishes.

Zazu

The zazu kitchen is inspired by a real sense of place. We are authentically Farm to Table, growing much of our produce with the caring attention of our farmer. We are as local as local gets and of the season to the moment. Menus are put together after a hunt through the gardens to see what is ripe and ready. Our style is simple and ingredient driven. We like to get the best ingredients and then not mess them up, but let them shine for what they are. Best ingredients are ones that are just picked, some never refrigerated. We believe deeply in the responsibility of our purchases, seeking to support small farmers, diversity of agriculture, pasture living for animals, and respect for their life given, using all parts “snout to tail”. The kitchen’s scraps are saved to feed the farm animals. Come join us at the table! – Duskie & John For reservations, click here: http://zazukitchen.com/reservations/

The previous incarnation of Zazu out on Guerneville Rd was a more intimate, satisfying experience. The new incarnation is OK, but the personal quality and scale are lost. Perhaps the rent for such a large space has forced the prices into the ridiculous range. I think the food is good, just not great. Wine and cocktail prices are ridiculous. There are better options nearby, like Lowell's, that do a better job for a better price with more personalized service. I have eaten here many times and feel like I can generalize, at this point.

Handline Coastal California

Handline Coastal California is a modern roadside eatery in West County, featuring sustainable seafood from the West Coast and burgers from chef Natalie Goble and Lowell Sheldon of Peter Lowell's organic restaurant in Sebastopol. The modern California menu celebrates the region's bounty and pays homage to the early immigrants who brought their cooking techniques and ingredients to the Golden State, handmade corn tortillas (milled onsite and cooked on the comal), Baja-style tacos, tostadas and ceviches are served alongside Dungeness crab sandwiches, fisherman's stew, fresh oysters and LA-style (Foster's) burgers. Handline is inspired by its location in the former Foster's Freeze on the main drag in town on Gravenstein Highway, where for generations, families have met up for a bite.

Reviewed By David S - Sebastopol, California

Following up on the success of Peter Lowell's "farm to table" restaurant, which has earned its popularity with local organic fare, creative entrees and great salads, the owner (Lowell Peter) has created a new restaurant that specializes in seafood. Housed in the former Dairy Queen (and Handline still offers soft serve ice cream for perhaps sentimental reasons), the decor is modern and spare. You order after you arrive and then wait at a table to be served. The main dishes and fish tacos are good, as are the french fries, fresh juices and craft beer. A recent lunch for two (fish tacos, fries and fresh juice) came to over $50 with tip. Really!? My recommendation: head a few blocks further downtown Sebastopol to Taqueria el Favorito, a local Mexican restaurant, where you can get fresh seafood and amazing tacos with homemade salsa for a fraction of the price. OK, Taqueria el Favorito looks and feels like a funky little diner on the edge of Stockton or Modesto, but for the price you'll feel like you're getting the real deal and still have $30 left over to go to Screamin' Mimi's for an ice cream and then to the Rialto to see a movie and get that big barrel of popcorn...

Martha's Old Mexico

Reviewed By zHojo - Prague, Czech Republic

According to the clipped out news articles on the wall and their own note saying thanks for 17 years of business (hopefully, not because they are closing), the restaurant is family owned and possibly in the second generation running the place. Though I was early for dinner and walked into a place where I was the second occupied table for dinner, by the time I left, five other tables were filled and it was only 615pm. Having had a huge Mexican burrito for lunch, I went light and only had a soft taco with mahi mahi fish and a side of Mexican rice with an entree of Mexican spinach soup. Flavorful, zesty, and full of crunch, the lighter fish taco was what I needed. The chips were of perfect thickness and crunch.

Peter Lowell's

Reviewed By sharonhM9883IC

The expected dynamic between waitstaff and customer has always been a bit unclear to me (I've dined here many times over the years and still wonder). I have only felt really comfortable there on one visit, of maybe 20, and that is when I brought several people with me. The staff is just not very warm and the procedure for ordering/seating is unclear (if one does not seat themselves at the bar) -- so one may be left feeling uncomfortable almost immediately upon entering, and in the evening it is so dark that it is difficult to read the menu. I go back for the daily macro bowl, though I occasionally end up ordering something else that sounds intriguing (which, though often good, usually seems overpriced). But the owner is a local boy and I'd like to support him. So, guess I could say -- I have mixed feelings about the dining experience at this restaurant, the food can be good, but is very pricey (though includes gratuity), especially during the dinner hours.
