Country Cafe

Have always wanted to go here after living in the area for 11 years so we decided to go try them for a nice Sunday Holiday Weekend Breakfast. Did actually try to eat here before but arrived only to find it closed even though it was a day they should have been open according to their hours. Parking is an issue because there really isn't much in front of it 2-3 spaces at the most so you have to do street parking. When we arrived we could tell by the cars it was busy. Walked in and every table was full and there were folks ahead of us. There is no sign that says please wait to be seated or please check in at the register and no one taking names. Eventually one of the only 2 servers they had looked at us and said it will be awhile. It was and more folks arrived but no one else was seated during that time. About 3/4 of the folks that were seated did not have their meals so again we figured going to be awhile. All of a sudden the other server a young man looked our way and said are you on the wait list? We said what wait list? He said well I will put your name on it. Again we waited. A table left and they actually separated a 4 top into 2 tables so it appeared yea we were going to be seated. BTW no one behind us got put on a wait list either. He came and got us and the couple behind us. Our table was bare no condiments, utensils etc. He tossed us a couple of menus and said do you want something to drink. We both ordered coffee. He came back sort of slammed the full mugs of coffee on the table both had spoons in them, the coffee sloshed around and he left. So we both take cream and I use sweetener but alas there was none. We waited and he eventually came back and said you ready to order? My husband said well some cream, sweetener, salt and pepper napkins and silverware would be nice to start. He said and I kid you not This is verbatim, Well, we pulled this table apart to make 2 so your's doesn't have all that stuff on it. My husband said so because you pulled the tables apart does that mean we don't get any of that? He said sure and that is when we got up and left. Seriously I ask you WHY does this area make it so hard to support local business and then they are shocked when a business fails? I can't review the food because we got none and we won't be back to try it but I can tell you that this place is in need of some server help and better management.

We first discovered this spot on a bike ride between Point of Rocks and Harper's Ferry on the C & O Canal biking and hiking trail. Brunswick is seven miles from Point of Rocks and a good stopping point for refreshment and a pit stop. This place has great atmosphere - a historic 1700s church building that has been renovated into a coffee and lunch spot. Lots of group seating, whether soft chairs and sofas, or tables and chairs. Orders are walk-up and taken in the pulpit / choir loft area. Service is a little slower than other places, but that's no problem when you pass the time catching up with friends or admiring the stained glass windows. Staff is friendly, and food is good -- light fare of soups, salads and sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, plus a case of bakery items. We like to make B in the B our halfway point for meeting friends who live in Gettysburg.

While the server was kind and attentive, and the catfish delicious, we were shocked at the pricing and lack of attention to detail for the restaurant in that price range. Pulling up we noticed immediately lack of attention to landscape detail, including empty flower beds, no mulch and front porch dirty/not swept. There was nothing warm to greet us. There was plastic seating on the patio. When we stepped inside while we appreciate the minimalistic style, it was not a warm or inviting atmosphere. When opening the menu, we found it very wordy and confusing, and the prices were shocking. While the main course ($26.00 for catfish on rice only) was delicious, it was way out of proportion to the price and plate (both huge). I think with some attention to detail for atmosphere (can be minimalistic with atmosphere) and price adjustments (maybe add a salad) and warm up the entrance, the farm to table experience could step up because the catfish was really delicious!

This small restaurant has an outdoor rafting theme, which suits its location near Harpers Ferry and the Appalachian Trail. It was lively on a Friday night. The crab soup was very good, the hamburgers and grilled cheese sandwich were average, the French fries soggy, and the salad crisp, if uninspired. The cupcakes (apparently the only dessert offered) were very good. They have a large selection of beers and other drinks. The raspberry lemonade was good. Service was fairly slow but very friendly.

Well, I have enjoyed Marcel’s , Restaurant Eve and other “nice” restaurants and I get the impression that at $100+ a head Patomack is trying to offer the same experience. Tonight they had some sort of fall theme going on and almost every course they served had something burning (straw, cinnamon sticks, sycamore and grape leaves). While the food was good (creative and a solid god but not excellent) it just didn’t make sense, for example they served “A homage to Linden Vineyards”, which was burning vineyard leaves from the winery and a skewer of Atlantic Sturgeon from NC, (which was so over cooked I thought it was pork) but where was the relevance in fish from another state to the vineyard? The little story cards with each meal was cute and made for interesting conversation.
Anyway, because of the theme the restaurant was filled with smoke fumes because all the diners were being severed the same themed dishes, which didn’t make for an enjoyable meal as all I could taste and smell was fire. To add to that they had a fire pit going right outside the door and every time they came in and out with food etc. they brought more smoke in with them.
As for the restaurant itself, the views are nice but at night you can’t see anything so there’s that. Also at those prices for dinner could you at least put a table cloth on the table and make it feel less like a hospital cafeteria. The half lit Christmas lights hanging from the beams, brick floor, and old greenhouse setting just didn’t work for me. I know, I know.....they got rave reviews from everyone else. The chef, the food, the views, that’s great, but this is my review and I’m not drinking the kool-aid.
With all that said, I’m glad we checked it off the list but the next time I want dinner in a greenhouse I’ll just go in the yard. Maybe it’s a better location for a Sunday brunch and we’ll try it again but for a nice romantic evening with a tasting menu, I want soft, I want ambience and I want comfort and it felt very makeshift for me.
So, In short for me, the whole thing, food, service, theme, and restaurant aesthetics were just, meh!!!

Great service. Food was good but salad had slimy black pieces in it that were old greens gone bad. Just enough to make it unappetizing. I picked them out. The falafel was delicious and the tahini sauce, cucumber yogurt and cider dressing were also delicious.
First iced tea could have been fresher. Second was great. Such a nice little restaurant with good food choices, good service, a bar, and everything. Just need a little more attention to freshness of certain items.

We found this place to have lunch on a freezing January day. There are old photos and signs from the area which are very interesting to look at. There is a fireplace and spring inside with a small bar and tables. It is rustic and cozy. There is seating outside with nice views of Harper's Ferry when it is warmer outside. The food was good and tasty. I had the Potomac Steak Sandwich... the burger was good too. Check this place out!

The selections are DELICIOUS...each individually made with fresh ingredients. I absolutely LOVE the Summer Rolls, Spring Rolls, Pad Kee Mow, Ginger and Cashew Chicken. You must save room for the Mango Sticky Rice and the Banana Fritters...YUM! The restaurant is small so you may desire to make reservations. Take Out is also available!!
