The Liberal Cup

The Liberal Cup Public House & Brewery in Hallowell, ME, is our take on the traditional English pub. Our mission is to provide a gathering place for our local friends and seasonal visitors to enjoy good food and drink. Like the pubs that dot the English countryside, The Liberal Cup is an inviting and cozy spot to bring family and friends. And while the draughts will conjure that familiar flavor of jolly ol’ England (ales and bitters being our specialty), we’re happy to brag that the food will not. Our award-winning chef has taken classic pub fare and elevated it with fresh, local ingredients. His daily specials highlight Maine's seasonal offerings and on the weekends he likes to turn The Cup into a gastropub with his haute and nouvelle cuisine creations.

A friend and I came for lunch on a not busy, snowy Monday afternoon. Comfortable, easy atmosphere, good drinks, friendly and attentive service and THE BEST garlic parmesan chicken tenders ($9.00) that will ever cross your lips! It is served with a parmesan dressing, greens and celery sticks. Out of this world! We split a delicious Turkey Club ($9.75) with REAL Turkey and the added bonus of not only the bacon, tomato and lettuce, but avocado, too! Fries included. It was wonderful!

The Red Barn

The Red Barn has been a mainstay of our community since 1977, when the Benedicts opened the original restaurant and started serving chicken and seafood to local citizens and curious tourists. Some of its employees have served as many as four generations of central Maine families who have come to count on the Red Barn for quality and value. Over the past thirty five years, all ten of Bill and Florence Benedict’s children have worked here at one time or another. The family’s work ethic has been engrained in all of them. It is the essence of Maine’s economic mentality—you work hard, show commitment to what you do, and eventually reap the benefits. In 1986, Laura Benedict took ownership of the Red Barn, which was then struggling to stay afloat amid an influx of national chain restaurants. The journey certainly hasn’t been an easy one, especially during this current time of economic uncertainty, but she has managed to remain tenacious, despite mistakes and obstacles. Thanks to that tenacity, and the patronage of countless loyal customers who keep coming back year after year, the Red Barn can proudly claim its status as one of the very last and busiest family owned and operated restaurants in the area.

The Red Barn is an old fashioned family restaurant where you order at the counter, grab a table (they go fast!), and when your name is called go pick up your food and enjoy. Everything is freshly prepared to order, so it comes out piping hot. The chicken basket is some of the most tender chicken you'll find, and the scallops taste fresh off the boat. Even the fries are fresh and hot. You won't be disappointed.

Took my cousins out to eat here for breakfast and I couldn't be happier!!
We all ordered Mocha Rocca's for drinks- Delicious! Our waitress served them with warm carrot muffins, which were gone quickly.
My cousins both got pancakes (one peach pecan , the other chocolate chunk) and they couldn't stop raving about how good they were...my eggs benedict was by far the best I had ever had, hollandaise was perfect and home fries were cooked/seasoned perfectly.
All in all a really great breakfast experience and just what I was looking for.

First off, no idea where the prior reviewer may have gone that involved a DQ with hot coffee and a fireplace. Certainly none I know of. This DQ has been on State Street for years. While you can't complain about the product - it is the same at all of them - the clerks, drive thru and closing at 8:30 when all the others are open until 9 is the deal breaker. The clerks all seem to have an attitude at the drive thru. You get ice creams passed out to you with sticky product on the sides and then act put out when you ask for napkins - they give you one. Oh - and this location no longer offers cherries. . imagine an ice cream shop that doesn't offer cherries. . . We will give it some time before we go back. Stick with the Bangor Street location - open until 9 and much better service. There is no fireplace here. . or tables. . .

Sweet Chili Thai Restaurant

A versatile dining experience! Great for families, groups or even a romantic dinner for two. We also just made it into the top 3 out of 15 restaurants that could "blow the tastebuds out of your mouth" according to Motovo Blog.

Reviewed By Warren E - Windham, Maine

Keep in mind, we're talking about Augusta. Most nights, just finding a place that's open is a big win. But Sweet Chili is a dependable good meal, reasonably priced, at a clean restaurant with basic decor, good service, and a really weird location. Yes, it's at the "airport" - perhaps the smallest terminal in any state capital. But location aside, it is a good choice.

I have been with my wife several times, my mother likes it, and we even do take out back to my father (Mr. "I can't eat pepper!"). So yes, they can make it low in spice. I just found out they also have sushi, although I haven't tried it.

Want a tasty meal in an out of the way place, go to Sweet Chili!

Downtown Diner

Was formerly the Bond Brook Pancake House, Mt Vernon Ave, Augusta, ME. Owners had an opportunity to move into a restored, historic building in the heart of the downtown business district. Even managed to preserve a stained-glass storefront-wide window advertising a shoe store which occupied the site in the original building. Specializes in breakfast and lunch, opening at 5:30 or 6:00 most mornings and closing at 2:00. Numerous breakfast combination plates available whenever they're open. Soup-and-sandwich specials daily featuring their home-made soups and chowders. Simple, straight-forward seating, reasonablle prices, and a staff that can be as fun or formal as you like. Real favorite with "the locals", the local electric and telephone line crews, and downtown office workers. Would suggest Trip Advisor discontinue Bond Brook Pancake House listing -- business no longer exists and rental property where they used to be is now vacant.

Located on Water Street in Maine's capital city...Augusta. Stopped in here with a friend for a quick breakfas, before conducting our business in Augusta. We actually had to wait about 5 minutes, as the Downtown Diner was full. We learned it is a very popular dining spot with locals and travelers alike and it has been there for many years...owned and operated by the same family. One server has been with them for practically the entire time. They serve breakfast and lunch...a very nice menu. My friend had and egg, cheese, and bacon sandwich on gluten free bread. I had an egg sandwich with bacon and onion on an English muffin. Both were really delicious and served delightfully hot! All the usual diner breakfast and luncheon items on the menu here...something for everyone, for sure. Clean restroom and parking either on Water Street or around back, with a convenient entry. Will definitely dine here again as we are in Augusta routinely for business.
