Mountain View Brasserie Incorporated

Reviewed By john c - Loudonville, New York

We took the drive from Albany area to try the Mountain View which we heard such good things about. We found a quaint restaurant with a European flair - a very pleasant atmosphere. My wife and I shared the pate appetizer special. I thought it was tasty but very overpriced for the quantity received. Our fish dishes were average and essentially over cooked and a bit dried out. The bread pudding dessert was ok but pasty. The couple who joined us had better things to say about their choices. Service was excellent. I'm uncertain if we would return.

DAMON BAEHREL

Since 1989,DAMON BAEHREL has worked completely alone at his home, which is where his small, handbuilt, 20 seat restaurant & 12 acre property/farm, that is the only source of ingredients for his original NATIVE HARVEST CUISINE, is located. Having no suppliers, Damon also creates all of the flours, fresh pressed oils, cheeses, pineneedle cured meats and vinegars from cultivated & native ingredients found on the property. Formally known as Damon Baehrel at The Basement Bistro, the restaurant has become a destination for food enthusiasts from around the world, often waiting years for their reservation, excited to take in the 4-5 hour Native Harvest experience.

In a tiny town in a big forest near Albany sits this culinary treasure. Damon Baehrel forages all of the vegetables, flowers and herbs from the 12 acre woods surrounding his house - restaurant. Many of the "sauces" are made from oils and sap that have been maturing for days, weeks, months or even years. Our 20+ courses had over 300 different ingredients that arrived on our plates in astonishing combinations. This Nature Harvest was served to us as a meal that unfolded over 7 hours (and yet seemed like only 3). Damon forages, cooks, busses and washes without a single helper making the achievement all the more incredible. A final note lest I forget...every plate was delicious without exception and some dishes were simply spectacular. On the coast of Maine, most times seafood is served fresh or frozen. Here - 3 of 4 dishes were made from live seafood.

Ruby's Hotel

Wow! Small. Looks like not much from outside. Better inside. Then the food. 3 of us split the crab cakes and a serving of fried lily blossoms. 1 had corn chowder. The warm bread arrived before the appetizers. The appetizers were outstanding. The dinners arrived together. Hot. On hot plates. Their idea of steak medium rare and mine coincide exactly. Interesting fried potato. Kale is OK but I like spinach better. 2 others had chicken, falling off the bone but moist. Mashed spuds with some skins. Skipped the kale and were offered substitutes. 1 had hamburger and fries. 2 flans and cherry cobbler for desert. 4 glasses of Zinfandel and a craft draft beer rounded out the orders. $151 plus tip. Well worth the visit and the price. Every thing was just as it should be.

I've been here with my wife several times for breakfast due to the close proximity to my residence. But even if it were a further trek, I would be a constant customer. The meat lover's omelet, cheese omelet, pancakes, egg & sausage biscuit w/ gravy were all favorites. They can make any combination or variety to your liking.Vanessa and Makensie are excellent waitresses, very attentive and efficient servers. Give them a visit, you will be glad you did.

This was the greatest little find. A brightly colored little tea shop along the highway with outdoor seating, little tables inside, gifts and knick knacks, other food stuffs such as jams, teas, etc. Fresh Irish Brown Bread, scones, tea and coffee. That's the menu. The proprietors were so nice, unpretentious and friendly. I felt exactly like I was at an Irish tea shop in Ireland (and I went to plenty of those). Not slick, fancy or overly sweet; just homey, small and comforting. The scones and breads were amazing, especially the lemon poppy scones. We also got some very tasty raspberry jam. The bread was still warm from the oven. If I could, I would go there every day, which I think many locals do. Whenever I was there, locals were always popping in to find out the news and say "hello". I can't say enough about this lovely, little cozy shop.

First, the inside of this restaurant is amazing. Hand-carved wood abounds. It's like eating in a Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. Someone told us that it was worth going to look at the restaurant alone, and she was right. The care and attention that went into the decor also goes into the food. I was with a large group for lunch and everyone loved their meals: chili, salads and sandwiches all got kudos. We didn't sit outside with a charming view of a stream, but I wish we had.

My friend & I both ordered omelette; hers was Western & mine was the Veggie. Too big to eat all at once ( 3 egg omelette which is standard, but packed with veggies, cheese, ham, etc) omelette were cooked just perfect, not sloppy nor dry... Homemade jams to go on toast ( made w/ fresh- baked bread made there)& tasty home fries. The pastries looked delicious, but we were too full to try them. There will definitely be many more visits to try on menu( have to try their lunch next time)
