Wood Inn

Reviewed By maiagaia - Macomb, IL

The Wood Inn is located just off the main square in the small western Illinois town of Carthage, IL. We have gone there on several occasions. I do know they serve a variety of food beyond the typical bar food offerings. We have been told that the prime rib is "excellent."

The hamburgers are decent, as is the pulled pork. They have a salad bar but I generally don't do salad bars in a pub. The food is not gourmet cooking but very palatable.

Our waitress was very good on our most recent visit.

The decor is eclectic; I think there is a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling. I believe they have bands there occasionally. The clientele is varied from family groups to guys stopping by for a brew after work. Call before you go to check out the nightly specials and hours; they were closing around 8:30 when we were there on a Tuesday night.

Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen, Carthage, Illinois, shares an intersection with two other fast food restaurants and a gas station. DQ is always busy and for many good reasons:
* tasty food
* reasonably priced food
* great specials ( who can't resist the $5 buck lunch with a coupon for a complimentary sundae
* no problem substituting milk for soda (and always nice and cold)
* cheerful, helpful staff (no matter when we have stopped by)
* clean, even the restrooms
* recently refurbished with super deluxe soda machines
* generous open hours

There I've said it!

From the outside, this place doesn't look like much. Once inside, the place doesn't look much better. Why then, a five star review? Order breakfast and you will understand. For a reasonable price, you'll receive a generous breakfast portion of freshly prepared and delicious food...coffee included in the price. Not the place to take a first date, but a down home type place for a really good family meal.

Alfano's Pizzeria

I'm in town briefly, and revisited Alfano's. Last time it was pizza, this time, I had a meatvall sandwich and my wife had the meatballs and spagetti. The sandwich was very generous for a reasonable price. Taste was good. My wife enjoyed hers as well. The place was pretty busy on an early Friday evening, so it would be hard to argue with success, but there's no place in Carthage to get a chicken parm or most of my Italian favorites. Again, this place is doing well as a pizza and sandwich shop, so there is no reason to change, but it would be nice to see the void filled.

The fajitas were made to our specifications, with LOTS of extra onions. They came out sizzling as they should. My grandson loved his bean dip and quesadilla. I live in an area with no shortage of Mexican restaurants, and here in Carthage, the one and only is as good as any of them.

Lilly's Frozen Yogurt presents a quality product at a reasonable price. After choosing from a nice selection of favors , you can choose from lots of toppings. Toppings are priced by volume rather than weight so there are no surprises at the end. All profits go to charity so your snack makes your tummy AND your heart feel good.

Expectations areliw infast food restaurants, so on my first visit to a Hardees, all I expected was convenience. Among us,we had four different types of sandwiches...mine was apretzle bread with egg, bacon and cheese. Other hadthe "monster" a coissant with egg, cheese and ham, and a monster minus the sausage. We all had similar reaction... nice fresh fillings; fresh eggs as compared to the usual pre made eggs; but all were just a little greasy. The coffeewas excellent and the hash browns were crispy. Servers were nice, but had trouble answering questions.

In a town too small to have the big daddy of coffee chains, what's a coffee lover to do? In Carthage, stepping out from amidst the roses of her flower shop, the proprietor changes hats to become barista suprema! What a great idea...repurposing a piece of her store to fulfil a need in the community...gourmet coffee. Even better...no need to learn a new language. You can order a 16 oz cup instead of the pretentious grande or vente.

Taste of China

Reviewed By MMMarty2ya - Lake Worth, Florida

I went to pick up take out for myself and my family. For the twenty minutes I waited, there were no other customers. Despite warm humid conditions, there was no air conditioning and condtions were stuffy. The dining room seats around 30 and was empty, the lights off, and cooled only by small portable fan...Very unappealing looking for sit down. Menu prices in line with other chinese take out restaurants. On the plus side, while ubattractive, the dining area and front waiting area looked spotlessly clean.
As to the food...the wontons were doughy, the general's chicken and egg foo young gravy WAY over salted, and the egg foo young packed in a way where it fell apart coming out of the container. The crab rangoon, egg roll and fried rice were all well prepared.
In all, not my cup of tea, but while visiting Carthage, options are limited.

I've long been a customer of Subway, and gave eaten many of their ojay sandwiches, but today was my first time trying their soup. It was broccoli/cheddar, and it was GOOD! As a person who enjoys soup, I'll be back soon to try their others.
