This place was recommended by a friend whose son attended VA Tech. The chips and salsa were excellent. We substituted the flour tacos for the corn tacos which were hand made. Son has the carnitas and it was very good. He had the jalapeño cheddar mashed potatoes on the side and were very good. My wife had the honey soy salmon tacos and she really liked them. I had the taco bowl without the taco and it was plentiful and spicy. Also very good.

The service was excellent. Apparently they have won best restaurant three years in a row. Definitely worth checking out.

I am never disappointed with ODB's bakery items! The giant gingerbread men at Christmas, darling sugar cookies for any and every holiday/season, the challah bread, the cranberry orange strudel, the macaroons, and now the cupcakes for Valentine's Day.

Today I bought some sugar cookies and while removing it from the tray a corner broke of. The cashier didn't charge me for it which I thought was really nice.

I always stop buy to get something for a hostess gift to bring with me if I am going out of town.

Gillie's Vegetarian Cuisine

Reviewed By BlueridgeCharlie - Dugspur, Virginia

We met local friends here based on their recommendation and proximity to the Lyric Theater, our post dinner destination.
No a fancy place but comfortable. Not vegetarians but do enjoy occasional meat-less meals.
Menu provides lots of choices with fish, black bean burgers, tofu and vegetables. The South Meets Southwest and a special with fried catfish, veggies and potato cakes were tasty choices.
Service was attentive. no problem eating and making showtime. Great choice.

My family of four ate here on a Thursday night. We had to wait for a table to vacate and be cleared but not too long. My daughters ordered lasagna, I had salad and Margherita pizza, and hubby had a calzone. We also had a pitcher of good, cold beer. Food and service were very good. We look forward to a return visit.

Black Hen Restaurant and Bar Blue

Reviewed By BernardAugust - Richmond, Virginia

For a college town, Blacksburg can be unfortunately short on fine dining, but Black Hen get it done. Small space, but good attention from staff. I dined alone at the bar and was impressed by both the food and the wine selection. The braised pork chop over Byrd Mill grits with kale two ways was a great update to an American classic. The butternut squash soup with radish chili as to die for. House-made sorbet for dessert was also excellent. I will go back the next time I'm in town.

Brigadeiro for dessert. The fried tapioca was so different and so good.

Since the restaurant was not taking reservations for brunch, we knew that we would have to wait for seating. When we arrived, we were told that our wait would be about 30 minutes. During our wait, we noticed that small parties were able to wait in the bar area. No biggie... but then we noticed that some of those people had come back and asked if they could take a table in the bar area if it was open. It appeared to us that they were taking tables even though these tables were part of the wait. At 35 minutes, I asked for an update. We were still 5th down on the list and had waited over the projected time. It didn’t seem right. There were people who had come in after us and were already going to the buffet.
At 45 minutes, I asked again and informed the hostess that we were concerned about our wait since it seemed that other people were going ahead of us.
Both hostesses displayed an attitude and were annoyed by my inquiries. They weren’t impolite, but they did speak to me as though they were angry with me and they’re faces were full of attitude.
We were seated shortly after my inquiry which I appreciate. 50 minutes... During our meal, I saw the hostesses working their butts off later clearing tables and seating people.
The food was okay but not great.
Overall, if your hostesses can’t estimate times and seat people properly during such a busy time as Sunday brunch, then you should take reservations and take the pressure off of them. But I guess if the greed of trying stack people into your restaurant overrides the pleasantness of an organized and calm reservation process, then you should expect the chaos and complaints that come with the seating process of first come, first serve. No wait; that’s not what necessarily happens here.
Won’t be back...

3 things about our experience: 1) really poor service; 2) food was terrible; 3) we had a simple request through our reservations that servers neglected. We sat for 25 minutes before we received water. Food finally served, could have been prepared in anyone's kitchen -- is Chef Boy-Ar-Dee cooking at Zeppoli's ? Sauce was tasteless, bread served was basically white bread. Nightly special -- shrimp in salad -- was so mediocre.
