Flappy Jack's Pancake House

Reviewed By onedeesse - La Verne, California

It's been a while since I last ate at Flappy's. I had not stopped because every time that I wanted to visit, the place was packed with people out the door (and I am serious, not joking). Since it changed ownership several years ago, the number of patrons have just grown like crazy. I started coming to Flappy's when it first opened and it was more of a locals place. We ate there at least once a week but then the crowds just started to grow and grow and GROW! I've never had a bad experience with the food or the service at Flappy's. In fact, Flappy's was one of the first places to really expand on their pancake menu. I would try one of their specialty pancakes and then a few months later, I would see a commercial for that pancake house with a very similar offering. Hmm...I asked the old owner (Perry was his name) and he said he had a few visitors from IHOP stop by so it didn't surprise him that he was getting copied.

Anyhow, this review is about my most recent visit in October. Since it had been at least two or three years since I last ate there, I was curious to see if service or food quality had changed. Well, everything is still the same and the quality is just as good. I ordered the lunch version of the Asian Chicken Salad and it was supposed to be the half portion. For a lunch portion, the salad was huge and I was full after I barely finished it. The chicken is grilled and it was so flavorful. There are also slivered almonds, mandarin oranges, wonton strips and pieces of celery. The dressing is just divine and I highly recommend this salad to anyone who likes Asian Chicken salad. You will not be disappointed with the quality and portion.

Let me address the crowd issue, we came at noon on a Friday. The place was still full and we had to wait about 10 minutes to get seated. By the time we left at 1pm, the place had thinned out a lot. Flappy's closes at 3pm so the crowds deminish after lunch. The great thing about coming a bit later is that you can still have breakfast and try one of their delicious omelettes, pancakes, waffles, crepes or skillets. I hope to come back soon but I need to time it well since I avoid the place on the weekends and my best bet would be to stop by during the week. Oh and if you come on a holiday weekend (Mother's Day, Easter, Christmas break, etc) forget about getting seated quickly because you are going to wait, wait, WAIT!

Donut Man

Reviewed By ILoveFoodComa - Burbank, California

The Service: 2 cashiers. Service is slow, always a long line waiting.

The Donut: Tried the famous strawberry donut and apple filing donut. Hmmm... overrated. The donuts are overly sweet. Strawberries have so much sugar coated on it and the dount becomes soggy of the syrup. The apple filing is so sweet, couldn't even have more than a few bites.

The fruit fillings are great idea but just not too much sugar please.....

The Parking: Private parking lot and street parking (free)

Canyon City Barbeque

Reviewed By BluegrassBrad - Lexington, Kentucky

There are so many barbeque places out there, it is hard to distinguish yourself from the crowd. Canyon City may not be terribly distinctive, but this place will certainly satisfy your taste for good solid barbeque. As a southerner, I was not familiar with tri tip, so my California colleague suggested I give it a try. I coupled it on a combo plate with pulled pork along with sides of baked beans and cornbread. The tri tip was very flavorful, good with or without sauce. I preferred the tri tip to the pulled pork (I've certainly had better of the latter). The baked beans were really, really good. Not too strong and not too sweet - perfect really. If you like lighter cornbread, you will really like Canyon City's. If you prefer denser cornbread, you may want to go another direction. All in all, a very good visit.

Great bunch of guys passionate about coffee and humanity, while they cater to the Uni students down the road, they donate 51% of their profits while promoting local talent.

If coffee is ethically sourced, how the profits are used is equally important and this outfit just does that, hats off. Giving more than you take while making great coffee resounds well with me.

It’s been years since I’ve been to the Hat so decided to stop in with my father. We split a Pastrami and a small fry. To my surprise, the sandwich had little flavor. I remember previously thinking they had one of the best pastrami’s around but I was disappointed. It was just an ok sandwich. The fries seem endless as we could not even finish a small.

Reviewed By desertj1 - Rancho Mirage California

A first time at this restaurant located in downtown Azuza. the interior was similar to a local eatery with several booths, a few tables and a great looking bar. The drinks were perfect and reasonable. The appetizer of flatbread cheese and steak for two was awesome and could have been an entire meal. We both ordered fish and chips and by the way the chips served beforehand were homemade. The meal was plentiful, the steak fries were good, the coleslaw a bit tasteless and the beer battered fish were slightly greasy. The fish was pure white and lots of it. This is a definite place to visit again. The service by Letty was also very good.

LA Tolteca

We’ve been going to Tolteca for years (about 30).
Recently they added some new items to their menu, including fish tacos. I like their menudo available only Sat/Sun.
Walk-up to order and food is brought to you. Best affordable Mexican food in the area. Food always arrives piping hot the way I like it.
Nice flamenco/Gipsy Kings style music when they remember to turn it on.
Attentive staff.

Clearman's North Woods Inn

Reviewed By Mark V - Seattle, Washington

I really enjoy this restaurant. I love the atmosphere of the place; it feels like a logging outpost in the middle of nowhere. Sawdust and peanut shells litter the floor (the peanuts are provided to you at your table or in the waiting area, for free, around the fireplace). It can be a bit dark in the dining area and you may need to hunch close to the table light to read the menu. The furniture is rustic; at your table it is unlikely you will have two chairs that are alike.

The food has been very good to excellent on every visit; I’ve never had a bad steak there. The dinners (steaks mostly) are a tad on the pricy side. But to be fair, you do get a ton of food for your money. The steaks all come with a large baked potato and rice pilaf. And in addition to that bottomless refills on cheesy garlic bread and the two types of salads they place on your table (a cabbage salad and a ranch soaked lettuce salad).

Stop in to this long time local favorite for a great steak with all the trimmings. Throw your peanut shells on the floor while swigging a tall brewski. You get 2 great salads with your meal and the steak filet dinner is great. Great service to boot and lots of mints to choose from on your way out!
