Everyone knows Aspen as a top-notch winter resort town. But outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy it in the summer, too, when the mountains become a perfect setting for hiking, biking and horseback tours. Some may be surprised to find it’s a top romance destination—but after all that outdoor exercise, who wouldn’t want to repair to a luxurious hotel room or a cozy, firelit bar?

Paradise Bakery & Cafe

My wife and I love this bakery. Place was packed at 4:30. A small place that does a land office business all day long. Great coffee and bakery products. Also sells ice cream but not to us on this winter day. Total carry out only. We got 2 Muffins, apple strudel and banana nut. They were huge so we ate the caps and left the rest for breakfast tomorrow. We also got 6 chocolate chippers and 6 sugar chippers. They’re like shortbread cookies. Had one each and saved the rest for tomorrow.
Great location near the ski lift.

Pyramid Bistro

Met a date here in December. The restaurant is hidden upstairs of a bookstore. Walking into the bookstore, you' never expect to find a restaurant. Windows surround the dining room providing a nice ambience. Wait staff are very courteous and attentive, but know when to keep one's space. I'm vegetarian and there are plenty of options as well as those gluten free. I enjoyed the risotto with chard and it was perfect; creamy but light. My friend enjoyed a shrimp dish which she enjoyed too. Both are very colorful. They have a nice wine list too and we each had a glass of wine. Me: malbec. Irony is that I paid $7/Spanish wine bottle at Trader Joes two weeks ago and $9/malbec glass last night. Ha. We skipped dessert but the capuccino was pertfectly frothy.

Matsuhisa Aspen is nestled beneath a quaint victorian house in the mountain town of Aspen Colorado and features the cuisine of world renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Japanese-inspired seafood and sushi, as well as an ultra-hip scene and lively bar crowd can best describe Matsuhisa Aspen. We are a continuation of Matsuhisa L.A., Nobu New York, Nobu London and may more locations around the world.

The food here is sublime. My wife's spicy chicken skewers were tender and juicy, with Chile peppers that were medium-hot without overwhelming the flavor. She followed with a "chicken dinner", a whole chicken breast in subtle seasonings, sliced crosswise on a bed or rice with accompanying grilled baby asparagus and green beans. Perfectly prepared, tender, juicy and delicious.

I started with the "shiitake salad", which came as a largish mound of mixed greens and leafy herbs, very lightly dressed with a light rice vinegar and oil dressing with some salt, sesame oil and pepper. The shiitake mushrooms had small stars cut in their caps, then were grilled and served as a ring around the greens. Delicious.

The "sashimi dinner" was next, as fresh as any I've had on either coast. Pieces were cut to bite size, and the salmon and tuna were lusciously silky, some of the best I've ever had. The portion size was enough to just fill me after the salad. A hearty eater might want to add a cold or hot appetizer to the mix.

I down-check the restaurant for the very noisy, distracting atmosphere. We were bracketed by two tables for ten, one with four well-behaved but active small boys. In addition, the ample staff seemed to be passing back and forth all the time as they dealt with the crowd.

It was evident that the restaurant is set up for large parties, as most tables were set for 6 or more. Be aware that your appreciation of the superb food might be affected by the noisy bustle.
