Savini's Restaurant

Reviewed By MariaPaps - Wayne, New Jersey

Some people choose restaurants for the food, other people "eat the atmosphere." Savini's offers both--tasty food and lovely atmosphere. I just came home from a work-related holiday dinner and felt compelled to write a review. Our group met up at the bar prior to our 6 pm reservation. I ordered an espresso martini which was served quickly and with a smile. It was delicious. When we were seated for dinner, we started with a variety of appetizers--oysters Rockefeller, eggplant rollatini, calamari, grandma's meatballs, mozzorella caprese, and tortellini in brodo. All the appetizers were delicious, sharing was okay, and service was expediant. A variety of entrees were ordered by the group, including sausage cavatelli, veal parm, ziti bolognese, seafood genovese, rack of lamb, veal milanese and chicken picata. Some entrees looked more appealing than others (a bit too "old school" in the plating, but all were tasty). For example, the sausage was oddly cut into cubes, the picata was plated rather simply with mashed potatoes and green beans/carrots, and the veal milanese did not include the arugula salad; the veal parmesan looked like it had been plated by the local dinner cook, and the seafood although fresh and delicious was also served on plates that looked like they belong on the Jersey boardwalk with a pale blue & coral pink shell motif. If anything should be improved, it would be the plating--something more visually appealing and contemporary would up the overall dining experience, especially with the prices being what they are. Some finesse would elevate the food and complement the atmosphere. Even the bread is basic --something that anyone can buy at the supermarket.

Incredible menu selections especially for pescatarians. Wished we could have ordered one of everything! The bass, halibut and tuna entrees were 5 star! Roasted vegetables outstanding. The biggest surprise was the tomato and feat salad.....tomatoes from heaven! Nice wine selection. Our server Niko was just the best!!!!!!

Truffles Truffles and More Truffles. This place is an institution. Must call months in advance or check for cancellations. We had Umbria Truffles in the risotto special and a Tomahawk veal chop topped with truffles. This place is a BYOB so we brought in a early vintage bottle of OPUS 1.
The meal, wine and service was fabulousa.
This place is not opulent but more rustic somewhat like a barn.

This bakery is great solo, friends, family and what I usually do, take home! Sook has the most incredible baked goods that were ever created in Bergen county. She is the most gifted pastry chef. Their almonds croissants are incredible as is everything else she creates! Oh, and BTW, the coffee is awesome also.

We love the chicken Philly cheesesteak and Chicken and avocado sandwich. I ask for the special without bread since I'm gluten free. This place is not Celiac friendly so I say this with warning for those with issues with cross contamination. The lunch specials come with a drink, fries, soup and dessert. The waiters and waitresses are attentive. Good neighborhood eat!

The Plum and the Pear

Reviewed By david s - New City, New York

My wife and I have been fans of restaurateur George Kalivas for many years, including former venues Il Villino in Waldwick and Bistro 18 in Montclair. The Plum and the Pear is another feather in his cap, firing on all cylinders. You're greeted with George and brother Alex's s warm smiles at the front desk and immediately taken with the inviting atmosphere of the main dining room, with it's warm woods and nicely spaced tables. Service is impeccable and professional. Breads and eggplant spread were delicious. As always with George, it's all about the food! Excellent appetizers included mussels, brussel sprouts and bacon salad, Thai spring rolls, and sicko lobster quesadillas. Excellent entrees included a perfectly prepared double cut pork chop, pappardelle with short ribs, simply grilled shrimp, and a fantastic sword fish. Each with delicious accompaniments. Too full for desserts, we each enjoyed coffees several cuts above the ordinary. The P&P is also a BYO, another plus. And it has a rear room for private parties as well. Don't miss this restaurant...go! Enjoy! You won't be disappointed.

Nirvana Indian Kitchen

Reviewed By Amy R - Montclair, New Jersey

We truly enjoyed our first visit tonight. Service is excellent- we were quickly seated and well taken care of. The menu is large but not overwhelming . We shared an eggplant and chick pea appetizer with tamarind sauce to start. I liked the eggplant a lot. The sauce was a touch too sweet for me. For entrees we shared shrimp masala and a chicken dish with black pepper , both in different slightly spicy rich sauces. Excellent! We tried a naan with cauliflower which was also chewy and very tasty. BYOB is a plus. The ambiance is calm and lovely, as is the soothing music in the background. I look forward to trying many dishes in the future !!
