The Queen's Head

I have eaten here before and thought I would take a client here for lunch. Walked in only 9 people in the pub asked for a table got a stern "Have you booked?" not a good start. They finally offered us a table and literally left us. After about 10 mins I got up to get a drink and was told they come to us - No they didn't. Basically we just sat there feeling awkward . There were 3 of them behind the bar so not short staffed. Decided other establishments deserved our custom more than this so we left. Can highly recommend the Queens head at Hawkhurst had a delicious meal there with a warm welcome.Hi Hubbjay,Apologies for not responding sooner, but I needed to ask my staff who were on when you arrived, if they remembered you, and they did.We have to ask people if they have booked for two reasons, one we don't want to give them a table allocated to someone else, and two if you have booked we can cross you out of our diary and show you to your reserved table, I just don't believe you were spoken to sternly, why would we?You also may not have realised that although there were only a few other tables occupied, you did all come it at the same time, so obviously we deal with each table in turn, and my staff were not standing around behind the bar, they were managing orders from the tables that were there before you, so I'm not sure a 10 minute wait is correct, but things can get distorted after the event.I will agree with you on the fact the Queens Inn in Hawkhurst is worth recommending though, assuming that is where you meant.Kindest regards,James

I really enjoyed the food here as did most of the family although mother in law reported her sirloin to be tough. Generous portions and I particularly enjoyed the whitebait; daughter loved her ribs. Regret not having the pie of the day as it looked fantastic. A great option for lunch or dinner in the vicinity.

We hadnt been here for a few years so met up with friends for a sunday lunch. Bar staff didn't seem to understand what low alcohol beer was until she moved and we saw it on the shelf behind her. We were handed a Sunday Lunch Menu and assumed this was the only food available; just one veggie option which was gnocci and was the size of a starter when it arrived - which didn't bother me since I don't particuarlly like it but it was all they had. Friends described their crab salad as 'very tired' and one had a frozen hard boiled egg! Apparently some restaurants actually buy in eggs already frozen - but I thought that was just McDonalds! The roast was good though very expensive for what it was and the deserts were great. The setting/building etc is lovely but its a shame about the food - it used to be great years ago.Thank you for taking the time to write your review. This is my chance to respond to you:The Sunday lunch menu is limited yes, if you mean 8 starters 8 mains and 6 puddings minimum limited, when some places only offer this on a daily basis. Our normal menu and specials which we offer 6 days a week is huge, so perhaps you should come to us midweek.Gnocchi is extremely Filling we have found by experience that a lot of it used to come back, but looking at our portion sizes i dont not think it is starter size. Our Dressed crab salad which comes in fresh every morning from Rye... which comes with a decent size salad, if you go to our facebook page or instagram you will see a picture of this salad. In regards to the FROZEN eggs i dont know if you saw our locals board they come from less an a mile down the road from a lovely man called Mr Taylor, i didnt even know you could get frozen eggs.... perhaps you should try frozen eggs then come back to me once you have. You have had your say and now i have had mine.Hope you have a lovely day.Harriet

Six of us ate here on Mothering Sunday. Never been before, but like to try out new places. Glad we found this one. This was a proper roast - even had pureed celeriac as a change from the usual carrots/broccoli/peas etc. Those vegetables were there aswell mind you, but it was nice to have a new taste on the plate.A good sized table with a cloth. Plenty of elbow room and decent comfy chairs that made you want to stay for longer. Oh, and Mother-in-law was given the little flower in a pot off the table as a parting gift. This isn't 'modern'. This isn't a Gastropub. This is like a country inn with great hospitality. The prices were good too. Only £2 for a decent cup of coffee. We are going back there today for Easter Sunday Lunch. We don't want to go anywhere else for now.

We arranged to meet 2 friends here for lunch- it’s a favourite destination of us all. We left an answerphone message to book and arrived to be greeted by the lovely landlady and to find our table in the garden prepared. We sat under the vine in the always pretty garden. The men ordered the chicken curry and the ladies the best quiche we had ever tasted. The beer and wine were excellent and the puddings divine. Thank you for a super time.Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We do appreciate our regular customers.

The George Inn

So many eateries make the hackneyed claim that they serve the best fish & chips in town, the UK, the known universe, etc etc. I haven't visited them all, so I personally can't say which is best, but I really can't remember anywhere being nearly as good as the George at Robertsbridge when we went for a delightful lunch. It probably helped that the cod had, allegedly, come off the boat at Hastings that very morning. The light, non-oily tempura batter also had something to do with it. The double-cooked chips were also perfect. I would go back for this meal alone. My partner's hake with new potatoes was also excellent. Throw in a couple of very nice homemade desserts, a fairly generous fish/seafood platter to start, and some reasonable wines by the glass, friendly service, a very pleasant room, and it really is very tempting to go back and do it all again.
