High on a hill overlooking the village of Lunz am See is an old mansion that until recently was falling apart and looking like something out of a horror film. Recently, Pierre Paionni and Anna Schrammel bought this eyesore, cleaned it up and turned the first floor into a pub-pizzaria called Chez Pierre.Pierre, formerly an engineer for Eastman Kodak in France, is the master pizza maker while Anna, formerly a Montessori kindergarten teacher, tends to taking orders and collecting money. The atmosphere is very informal, and Pierre often sneaks out of the kitchen to have a beer and chat with customers. Two dogs and a cat round out the scene. The couple have done a remarkable job of renovating the downstairs, creating a cozy pub-like atmosphere in the small main room where you enter. Another dining room, suitable for larger parties, is eclectically furnished with old barber chairs, a motor scooter, guitars and other random stuff Pierre collected over the years. A third room houses several tables and leads out to the terrace, which overlooks the village. There's another patio out front, too, where you enter the pub. All indoor rooms are non-smoking (yea!).The pub features a selection of baked-to-order individual pizzas, which can be customized with toppings to your liking, a calzone, and a large selection of interesting bottled beers, mostly from across Europe, as well as a few basic Austrian lagers on draft. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available. All beer and pizza options are printed on the menu, and although the print is quite small, several pairs of reading glasses are available to aid the sight impaired. My wife and I tried a few of the pizza combinations, and all were piping hot, thin crusted, crisp and delicious. I recommend ordering one pizza to share to start, and if still hungry after, then ordering a send (hot) pizza. The pizzas come out fast (perhaps 5 minutes), so waiting is not an issue. The basic "Margherita" pizza, which was delicious, was 6 euro, with each additional topping costing 1 euro.We tried only a couple of the more exotic beers, but suffice it to say there is a rather large selection that include Belgian trappist beers, stouts and many others. Most are in 0.33-liter bottles, although a couple were in 0.5-liter bottles. Most are priced at 4 euro, though a couple are priced much higher. Draft beers were reasonably priced at under 3 euro for 0.5 liter.Open at 17:00 for dinner Monday through Friday; 11:00 for lunch and dinner on the weekend.

Bruckners Bierwelt

We happened upon this small family owned brewery while meandering the back roads of Austria. It is located at an intersection of our backroad and a smaller main road leading into Gaming. Not only can you have bite to eat but we were welcomed to view the brewery operations. We ordered the Brauerbraut which was a slice of brown bread with cheeses and meat heated under the broiler. They also offer a vegetarian dish or two. There is a selection of various items including gifts, flavored schnapps, glasses and other various items. You can even spend a day with the brewmaster for a fee. Stop in, have a bite to eat, pick out a 6 pack and enjoy the day!
