Reviews on Middle Eastern food in Samarkand, Samarqand Province, Uzbekistan. Samarkand (Uzbek Latin: Samarqand; Uzbek Cyrillic and Tajik: Самарқанд; Persian: سمرقند‎; Russian: Самарканд; Greek: Σαμαρκάνδη), alternatively Samarqand, is a city in modern-day Uzbekistan and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city from the late Paleolithic era, though there is no direct evidence of when exactly Samarkand was founded; some theories propose that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean, at times Samarkand was one of the greatest cities of Central Asia.

Ziko is a very very nice young guy who learned how to cook when he was a kid and then got some experience in western horeca while studying in Britain. The restaurant has his mother's name, and the fact I know it is another clue for you : this lad loves to speak english (a rare uzbek quality) and to know what his clients enjoyed ot not in his restaurant and what they'd like to know about the country. He's been very helpfull AND the plov was really good. The variety of the menu is also a rare talent in uzbek restauration : we avoided completely tourist-oriented restaurants after two really bad experience and at in the marketplaces instead (with no gastric problems), but those usually serve ONE meal (tthough good and cheap). "Zahro delicious food" combines the advantages of a tourist's restaurant and of a market food-place. It's good, authentic, simple, cheap, frequented by locals, and various. Plus it is big enough to be with 10 and still find seats ; also a good place to meet the cheap backpackers in town. The style of the welcoming is totally unusual (if you don't speak russian or uzbek, at least - I certainly missed a lot of opportunities because of that). To find this unadvertised restaurant, you should go behind the bread bazar, just close to Lion square (Registan / Sherlarmaydoni) and Bahodir guest house.

This appears to be a new restaurant, since it was a short walk from our hotel we thought we would give it a go.The restaurant is clean and bright, no English menu, but plenty of pictures and the young staff that work here we more than happy to use goggle translate to resolve any questions. We had only downloaded Russian and that was fine to get by with.We ordered 2 salads that were a work of art. Then 2 mains a lamb stew which came with chips and gravy and a plate of grill lamb.As far as I can tell the only alcohol is beer. We appeared to be the only tourists in and everyone else were sticking to soft drinks. In summary the food and staff were great, more bright clean cafe style than fine dining.Good value.

This place was a recommendation of a counterpart, who invited us to try Samarkand samsa for lunch. Totally amazed by tender samsa meat! Also, they offered a good variety of salads and other meals like, kebabs, soups etc. But for me it's a must-go place when I crave for delicious samsa! Tip on how to find it: either find it on Google Maps (called Shashlikhona on Qo'qon or Kokand Str) or ask taxi drivers for the most popular samsa place!

Besh Chinor

Reviewed By FellowTraveler292835

We came to Besh Chinor wanting traditional Uzbek food experience and Besh Chinor did not disappoint. We ordered the lamb shashlik, "fresh" salad (cucumber, tomatoes, and dill salad), plov, and bread. The menu was only in Russian however there was a staff member who did speak English and was able to go into detail about the dishes. We were also able to go to the shashlik counter and choose which we wanted (there is vegetable shashlik available). The food was good but very standard in taste thus not a 5 star review. However, for a real Uzbek experience, besh chinor was very good.

This restaurant is very popular with the locals and tourists and can get crowded. Our small tour group had dinner--service was good and there was a wide variety of Central Asian food on the menu. Outdoor dining was pleasant and came complete with electronically generated bird chirps from different parts of the area.
