From ornate mansions to ocean views, this charming city - the largest in Maine - will enchant you. Saunter down the brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets of the revitalized Old Port District, where you can browse through bookstores, explore craft shops and eat to your heart's content. Visit the Portland Head Light, which dates back to 1791, and is the oldest lighthouse still in continuous use in the U.S. The great poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the city's native son, and you can visit his childhood home, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House. At the end of the day, and without kids in hand, unwind and rest your tired feet at one of the city's brewpubs.

Tiqa

On a recent Sunday night, my husband and I were looking for a calm place for an interesting bite. He was a bit under the weather, but still wanted a little something. We settled on Tiqa, with its easy-to-customize menu. He settled on a ful, consisting of fava bean puree, marinated chickpeas and heirloom tomatoes. I had a few oysters and an order of falafel accompanied by a Mediterranean gin and tonic, made with Botanist Gin, bitters and a spring of rosemary. Presentations, preparations and sauces were all excellent. We hope to return for a larger sampling when we're both feeling up to snuff.Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback and glad you enjoyed yourselves. Hope you feel better and we look forward to hosting you again.Sincerely,Deen

Had heard good things. Went for lunch and was underwhelmed. The pita does not seem to be housemade. The salad was swimming in dressing and the falafel was unremarkable - very gray and did not have the appearance of being house made. We saw a chicken kebab meal that was served to another table and it looked really good. May go back to try the kebab but otherwise was not wowed.

Lolita Vinoteca + Asador

Went to dinner with a friend from Portland who swears by this restaurant. She was not wrong. It is a great small plates neighborhood gem near the Eastern Promenade. Service was wonderful. Lots of locally sourced ingredients. We shared two different tasty salads and some cured salmon. Then we each got a different pasta dish. I had the squid ink pasta which was perfection. I also had a delicious Coney Island-style Old Fashion. We were too full for dessert. I definitely would come back to Lolita Vinoteca on my next visit to Portland. The place is tiny so make a reservation.

Piccolo

Modern Italian restaurant with cuisine inspired from the humble foods of Southern and Central Italy that incorporates local Maine products.

This tiny restaurant is a wonder. Just 8 tables and a half dozen seats at a bar--it would be full with about 25 guests total--Piccolo does it right on all levels. The 2 servers doubled as bartender, making among other things generous and great Negronis. Every bite savored by my wife and me was near perfection, starting with the crazy good warm olives. The chef clearly has the time to give every plate attention, including the outrageously delicate peekytoe crab salad I had. Just a few simple ingredients--corn kernels, lettuce, crab, paper-thin shaved radishes, a sweet corn sauce and a basil oil ring around it all--and it was divine. We split a pasta dish of housemade cavatelli in an unctuous, deeply flavored lamb neck ragu. Amazing. Our entrees were also spot on, including my black bass with crispy skin and buttery, melt in your mouth flesh. All sauces, vegetables, and sides show a lot of love and display the fruits of long, slow, patient cooking. Our servers were great and had significant wine knowledge too. This was a most memorable evening! Cannot recommend it enough.

Given the ambience and presentation of authenticity, Solo does not deliver like they should. On arrival, I made a Rez but was told Open Table accepted it, but "we're not seating and in this area, so we don't really have a table". However, she did end up seating us in that area, not a great introduction. Olive oil does not compliment sourdough bread that tastes like rye, and the olive oil could be better quality. The heirloom tomatoes, prosciutto and fresh mozz were delicious. The eggplant was pressed too hard and was really tough. It also needed more sauce. The one pasta dish on our table was over cooked. I will say the strip steak was perfectly cooked med-rare and really delicious. The bread sticks we're not light and crisp, they seemed mildly stale. The focaccia was odd and the cookies were rather tasteless and just crumbled apart when you tried to eat them. You just want a really good piece of semolina bread with Italian food, and perhaps almond floured cookies. I know semolina is not popular in northern Italy, but even plain crusty Italian bread would be better. Loved the wine list. Plenty of Italian wines to choose from.

My wife and I had dinner here last week while visiting the Portland area. We really liked everything about this place, from the warm welcome, to the excellent and relaxed service, to the outstanding and refined version of Greek food that is on offer here. We are already wanting a return engagement. Everything was terrific, but I especially recommend the scallop appetizer and their take on cheesecake for desert. Do not miss this place. It stood head and shoulders above the other "fine dining" option we tried while in town.

We returned to EVO last night for another amazing meal. This restaurant just gets better and better. We started with the Brussel Sprouts, Chickpea fries and Muhammara, with each dish just excellent. The muhammara was served with fresh pita and crackers. The chickpea fries are addictive, and the brussel sprouts carmelized to perfection. We shared mussels served in a tumeric broth and fought over wiping the bowl with the pita bread. We followed that with falafel, monkfish and lobster dishes all of which were flavorful, artfully plated and cooked to perfection. We ended the meal with the cookie plate and baklava ice cream for dessert, the cookies were chocolate, a riff on pb &j, and baklava cookies and just saying that does not do justice to these amazing pastries. The wine list was interesting and varied, we got to try some wines we have ever tried before, and my martini was superb!
