Horaiken is a Nakatsu original and if you come to Nakatsu many people will recommend it. It is a good restaurant and the food is good. There are garnishes on your table so you can decorate your ramen. Sadly they don't have the fresh garlic and garlic presses found at some of the other Ramen restaurants. I am not sure what sets this shop ahead of the other selections in the city. The price is a bit high for what is a very casual looking shop. No problem with the service but nothing exceptional either. Don't get me wrong, it was a good bowl of ramen, and hit the spot. But at about $17 for my meal (Ramen+Gyoza+drink) I maybe expected a bit more. Still, if you are in Nakatsu and you've already had your fill of karage, this is a place to try.

This was probably a chain restaurant serving high quality food. There was no English menu but the server showed us photos of some of the popular dishes in the restaurant webpage on his smart phone. There was no open dining room. Instead there were small partitioned rooms each with a few tables, which reduced the noise levels from other boisterous guests. All in all, an enjoyable experience.

I truly believe that Moriyama's Karaage(Fried Chicken) is the best "Karaage" in Nakatsu city,which has the largest number of the fried chicken shops in nationwide. The skin is crunchy while meat is juicy.

Deeply flavorful, crisp, and sophisticated, the chicken karaage in this part of Kyushu puts ANY fried chicken I've ever had in America to shame. It all truly makes the Colonel look like a private.A short distance away is Nakatsu, in Oita Prefecture, which is well-known throughout Japan as having the finest chicken karaage, with literally dozens of shops to choose from. And there are loads of Nakatsu-style shops even in Fukuoka City. But my favorite takeout meal of all-time is this humble place, just at the borderline in Fukuoka Prefecture. Taro's "sunazuri," chicken gizzards and dark meat, "momo-niku" karaage are worth the trip from Hakata just to experience while they are hot.
